Dangerous Brian has a review of Cascade Failure up on his blog.
Great review. Brian actually sent me a list of his critiques, with some specific issues that didn't appear in the review, in an e-mail yesterday. I was planning on releasing a new version in the next 24 hours or so that addressed quite a few of them. All the critiques that he raises are valid. I want to address one of them here.
Yes, there are no space combat rules. The reason for that is in every sci-fi game I have seen, either the rules are so complex involving turning arcs and angles and stuff that it means the pilot player gets a long long period of spotlight time in the game (which I don't like) OR the rules are so simplistic that it seems more efficient to me to just have people make piloting checks and let the GM narrate what happens.
That said, I acknowledge that I need to add more beef in this area of the game. However, due to wanting to get the beta released before the Ennies submission deadline, I cut a few corners and it didn't make it in. Future versions will have such a section (I have a lot of unused art for it too).
One thing I want to highlight here is a statement that Brian can say, but that I really cannot.
"I was immediately struck by how easily the rules could be applied to such diverse campaign settings as the Firefly, Babylon 5, Star Wars, Aliens, Mass Effect and even Terminator universes. Or any other setting (home-brew or otherwise) for that matter."
Yes, Brian. YES YES YES.
So thanks Brian and I look forward to seeing some actual play reports whenever you cajole your group into a space adventure!
