I am going to tap into the wisdom of crowds on this situation facing our party tonight.
There is this dude. Lets call him Bob.
Rumors suggest that Bob is responsible for a general dampening of magic in the area. The effect is kind of like a mythal in Forgotten Realms. A powerful magic effect that affects a large area, seemingly permanently.
When we talk to him, he is an semi-insane ghost. In his ramblings, he said that in order to remove the effect, we have to cast a particular spell. Nobody in the party knows the spell because it is beyond our current power level. We would need to get a good bit of XP before we could afford it.
However, remember that Bob is semi-insane. He has lied about several things already. He makes extensive use of illusions to fuck with us. He could be lying about this too. We don't know.
We believe it is within our power to kill him. Final death. Rest in pieces.
As I see it, we have two options.
1. Kill him, hopefully that will remove the effect. If not, when we are powerful enough to cast the spell, we can try it then. If he is lying though, we may be stuck with that damn effect forever with no way of knowing how to remove it. The positive of this is that it would allow us immediate access to some things that he is protecting (i.e. loot).
2. Keep him around until we are powerful enough to cast the removal spell. If he is lying, dunno what you could do at that point. Can't really torture a ghost. Can't really force anything out of him. Try to find some way to cure his insanity? I dunno. But we would also have possibly wasted our XP on learning to cast a spell that could be useless in this context (i.e. a potentially sub-optimal build choice for someone in the party).
Thoughts?
