In Novarium, as in troupe-style play like Ars Magica, you have several characters and those you are not currently playing are off doing things in the off-season while you go on each adventure.
So far, this is the list of things to do while you are in the off-season:
1. Agricultural work to feed the group
2. Resting from injury
3. Writing Magic Scrolls
4. Writing Books on Magic
5. Studying from Books on Magic
6. Making a copy of an existing book
7. Magical Experimentation
8. Crafting complex objects
9. Training an Apprentice
10. Skill Training
11. Long-Distance Travel
