The Structure of the Virtual Box Set

So I have finished the first pass over the game mechanics book and as a result my vision of how many books are going to be in Novarium and what they are going to be about is shaping up.

I am writing this post to both serve as an illustration of how broad the project is and to also force me to put some plans in writing that I have been coyly dodging. I find that when I put something down (even if I change it later) it makes it that much more "real" and forces my mind to grapple with it. It serves as a roadmap of sorts, allowing me to better organize thoughts going forward.

First, there is a book for everyone to read. It is an overview of the whole game, written from a kind of "why should you bother perspective.

1. Game Overview

Next, there is a set of books that are for the player.

2. Introduction to Roleplaying Games
3. Examples of Play
4. Character Creation
5. Arms and Equipment
6. Magic
7. Game Mechanics
8. The World of Coynne

Next, there is a set of books for the GM.

9. Gamemastering
10. Campaign Design
11. Challenges
12. Opponents

Finally, there is the Devil's Fork Campaign Setting.

13. Climate and Ecology
14. People and Places
15. Villains
16. Handouts

In addition to this, there will be a number of ancillary files like character sheet, maps, etc.

Most of these books are going to range from 12 to 40 pages. Hard to call them books, but what is the alternative? What do you call PDFs except books? I dunno. The Devil's Fork stuff will probably be substantially larger. I am guessing the total package will come in at around 500 to 600 pages.

To keep things in perspective, right now the total written material is about on par with the Errant book in terms of size. So basically I have written a medium sized game at this point. Now I have to add to that. Tally ho!

Now that I have written it here, we can see whether my estimates are worth a damn in a few months when this project is near completion.
