PREVIOUSLY (UNSEEN) ON "COMMUNITY".....

The latest episode of 'Community' is a contender for a 2011 Toobits Award as Best Contribution to the Toobworld Concept.

"Paradigms Of Human Memory" was a take-off on that old TV cliche of the clip show, in which a series would save money by putting together a lot of clips in the form of flashbacks.

But in this case, most of the clips seen were from episodes of 'Community' that never happened - at least on our TV screens.

However, we in the audience of the Trueniverse never see everything that happens to our favorite TV characters, and as Martha Stewart would say, that's a good thing. Did you really want to see Hurley taking a bleep in the jungle on 'Lost'?

The classic example has always been the fact that in 'Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan', Khan Noonian Singh says that he remembers Pavel Chekov from his time on board the Enterprise. But in the episode "Space Seed", their paths never crossed as far as we could see. In fact, Walter Koenig wasn't even in that episode!

So the 'Community' episode of "Paradigms Of Memory" is a worthy example because of how many examples it serves up.

Westeros is the mythical realm in George R.R. Martin's book series from which "Game Of Thrones" was adapted for television. (For Toobworld purposes only, Westeros is located on the planet Mondas.)  Recently there's been a bit of a feud online, after Martin dissed the ending to 'Lost' and Lindelof didn't take it too kindly.....

I AM "30 ROCK". I AM THE ISLAND ON "LOST".

My little buddy Sean, all the way from Taiwan, sent me this transcript excerpt from the latest episode of '30 Rock'. And a good thing too, because it just sailed right over my head!

Tracy Jordan:
"And I'm definitely getting a private island...."

LizLemon:
"You're getting an island?"

Tracy Jordan:
"Every crazy A-lister owns an island.
Nicolas Cage, Celene Dion, Charles Widmore..."

(BTW - that's not a typo with the name of Tina Fey's character; that's the way Tracy says it - as one word.)

So with the mention of Charles Widmore being as real as Nicolas Cage and Celine Dion, and with no mention of 'Lost', we should be able to accept this as a legitimate connection between both shows.

However, '30 Rock' throws out references all the time to other TV shows AS TV shows which should be sharing the same TV dimension in which it resides. There are times when I just want to say, "Hang the sense of it," as Slartibartfast might, and toss '30 Rock' - along with 'The Larry Sanders Show' and 'Extras' and probably this new show 'Episodes' - into their own TV dimension and let them Zonk away to their hearts delight!

So it could be that Tracy had seen 'Lost' and was confusing a TV show with reality (as it is known in Toobworld, that is.) But for now, turning a blind eye to some of the more egregious Zonks, '30 Rock' and 'Lost' both exist in Earth Prime-Time. Somehow, Tracy learned about Charles Widmore - who, as a wealthy industrialist in the outside world, would have plenty of mentions in the news.

He just didn't know that Charles Widmore died on that island several years ago.....

MARK OF THE OCEANIC FLIGHT

Mark Thompson is one of my best buddies, and he came through for me with this picture he snagged from the TV movie "Category 6: Day of Destruction":

Oceanic Airways is best known from 'Lost' but has appeared in enough other TV shows - some even before 'Lost' first aired! - to have been inducted into the TV Crossover Hall of Fame (in June of 2007).

And while this appearance is another tally mark for Oceanic Airways in the overall TV Universe, it is not from Earth Prime-Time. There is an alternate TV dimension out there, one the 'Sliders' crew may have visited, where the Earth is always being pummeled by natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, ice ages, the splintering of the moon...... It's a wonder the human race has survived as long as it has on that world!

But this is a great addition to the Toobworld Central crossover collection - I especially like that Mark thought to add the info bar as well!

TOBY'S TIP TOP TOOB

As 'Lost' neared its finale after six seasons, I wondered if it would "stick the landing" - that is, if it would provide a powerful and satisfying conclusion that would at least answer the major questions.

In my opinion, it did. But I can understand why so many people were unhappy with it. For me, the Big Reveal at the end which splained away the structure of the sixth season provided a strong argument to link 'Lost' to at least four other series.

Happy as I was with the overall series, it just missed cracking my Top Five shows of all Time, which had been set in stone for thirty years:

1) 'The Prisoner'

2) 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'

3) 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'

4) 'Columbo'

5) 'Maverick'

However, upon reflection, I realized that the Top Five needed to be revised anyway, and 'Maverick' fell two slots to #7.

That's because I realized there's another show which deserves to be in that Top Five. It is a show which will always have me watching the repeats, no matter how often they crop up; I'm left eagerly awaiting the next new episode even as soon as the last one has finished airing. And the best test of all as to its greatness: if I stumble across an episode on TV, I'll watch it, complete with commercials - even if I already own it on DVD.

And that show - as if you couldn't tell from today's overall theme - is 'Doctor Who'.

So here's my line-up of my Top Ten Favorite TV Series:

1) 'The Prisoner'

2) 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'

3) 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'

4) 'Columbo'

5) 'Doctor Who'

WISH-CRAFT: NEVER ENOUGH EIGHT

There's a great reason why 'Doctor Who' should bring back Paul McGann as the eighth incarnation of the Doctor: they would never have to worry about any need for a timey-wimey splainin as to why he looked older than he did in the one TV appearance for McGann as the Doctor. We never got to see a regeneration scene bridging the eighth Doctor to the ninth. So who knows how old he had become by the time of the Time War?

I'd like to think that Grace Holloway stayed with the Doctor until her death. And maybe she was the mother of the offspring who would give birth to Susan, the Doctor's grand-daughter. Of course, this would mean that at some point Susan would have to be left in the care of the Doctor's first incarnation, in order to keep her safe from the apocalypse that was sure to come with the Time War.
This would mean that during the time she was with the Eighth Doctor, he would always know how the rest of Susan's life with his own original version would play out - in much the same way as Mrs. Hawking did with her son Daniel Faraday on 'Lost'. What do you think, fanficcers?

DESMOND TOOB TWO*

'Lost' is finished, but I don't think I'll ever be able to let it go. (Especially not with the Numbers still popping up in Toobworld!)

My favorite character on the show was Desmond David Hume, which shows how big an impression he had to make - since he wasn't introduced until the first episode of the second season. By then, any of the other characters previously established could have taken root as my favorite on the show.

Here's how we first met Desmond, although we didn't know who he was until later in the episode.....

I would have to say that it is the greatest second season opening ever!

Here's that same scene, but this time a YouTuber let the song play throughout:

Desmond was known for addressing everyone as "Brotha", which is so infectious when used with a Scottish burr. I wonder how many people out there picked it up and still use it in their conversations even after the show is over?

"LOST" MAY BE GONE, BUT THE NUMBERS LIVE ON

The numerical sequence of 'Lost' played a role last week in a TV series that at least shares the same executive producer as the show about the mysterious Island......

Re: Last week's episode of 'Fringe':

The third season episode "6995 kHz" involves the broadcast of numbers in Spanish from several radio towers. The numbers include 8, 15, and 42. It is reported that a total of 15 people get retrograde amnesia due to the broadcasts.

Plus there were references and examples of "Numbers Stations", which gave it something of a 'Lost' feel as well.

NUMBERS RUNNING: BADGE 416

When the body of Dr. Mark Sloan's long-missing father was discovered in a Los Angeles tomb, his detective's badge had been placed inside the crypt as well. Back in 1947 (when he was last seen alive), Detective James Sloan held badge number "416".

This was all seen in the 'Diagnosis Murder' episode "Sins Of The Father Part Two".

"4" and "16" are two of the Numbers in the sequence from 'Lost'.....

[With the frame grab, it does sort of look like "418", but Dr. Sloan's son did say it was "416".]

"Mr. Cluck's Restaurant" was a fast-food chicken franchise seen in 'Lost'. Hugo "Hurley" Reyes used to work there until he won the lottery. Later, he bought the company, only to see the latest franchise detroyed in a meteor strike.

So......

What if this was an early prromotional idea by Mr. Cluck's thirty years ago - delivery service?

'Lost' may have ended, but "The Numbers" keep adding up......

Target gave us an appropriate price for computer keyboards in one of the blipverts which ran during the series finale:
In last Saturday's episode of 'Doctor Who' ("The Lodger"), most people may have picked up that the Eleventh Incarnation of the Doctor sported the number "11" on his jersey, but as can be seen in this picture, both teams also had a number "23". (The one from the opposing team is to the left.)

ROSE'S TURN

As Jack lay dying at the end of 'Lost', a plane full of the Island ordeal survivors flew overhead in the Ajira jet to escape back to the mainland - Lapidus, Sawyer, Kate, Claire, Richard, and Miles. Nine were left behind on the Island - Hurley, Ben, Desmond, Rose, Bernard, Cindy and the kids, and you can't forget Vincent. (Come on - is there anybody who didn't well up when Vincent lay down beside Jack to keep him company as he crossed over? And wouldn't you have liked to have seen him in the church as well?)

Of course, I think the Island number quickly dwindled down to five once Desmond took Cindy and the kids back to civilization on board his boat, the Elizabeth. And within two years, I believe the Island tally was reduced by one more.

Jack's father Christian told his son that many of those gathered in the church didn't die for many years after Jack. But that wouldn't have held true for Rose.....

When she landed on the Island, Rose was suffering from terminal cancer. But something about the Island, Jacob's magic perhaps, beat back the Big C into remission. And she knew that should she ever leave the Island, it would kill her.

But I think it killed her anyway. Remember, when Desmond shut off the access to the energy of the Golden Light, a lot of its benefits were discontinued - Not-Locke's invulnerability, Richard's immortality, and if Jin and Sun had survived the submarine attack, there never would have been any more Kwon Kids to keep Ji Yeon company.

We have to add the healing powers enjoyed by Rose. I think within two years, her cancer would have come raging back; and without the proper facilities or medical experts to treat her, her chances may have been even less.

As for Bernard, I think he would have carried on, still staying on the Island even without Rose. I believe she would have insisted on that; no taking a quick way out to join her for ol' Bernie. And for a few years more, he had the steadfast and loving Vincent by his side, until the loyal Lab also passed away a few years later.

BACK-TRACKING JACK

In the past, Toobworld Central has made the suggestion that sometimes the televersion of God has stepped in to create a do-over in the TV Universe. That is, He has rolled back Time to alter events that already transpired.

Usually this has taken the form of recastaways which can't be covered by the usual splainins like plastic surgery or quantum leaping. There are two specific examples I have of that - 'The Sopranos' and 'Seinfeld'.

On 'Seinfeld', great character actor John Randolph had been cast to play George's father, Frank Costanza. But they soon brought in Jerry Stiller to play the role instead and he indelibly made it his own. Normally, we'd have to then come up with a reason for the recasting, but in this case it wasn't necessary. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David decided to reshoot Randolph's scenes with Stiller and then replace the original footage for the eventual DVD sales. It was as though John Randolph's portrayal of Frank Costanza never existed. (But they didn't bother to do this with the role of Jerry's dad, played in the pilot by Phil Bruns, once Barney Martin came on board as Morty. Probably because too much time had passed and Jerry looked slightly older than he did in the pilot.)

On 'The Sopranos', Fairuza Balk was originally hired to play FBI Agent Deborah Ciccerone and she filmed a few scenes for a season finale. But then the next season was pushed back so that David Chase could plot out the next two seasons rather than just one, and Balk needed to be replaced. Lola Glaudini was now cast in the role and Chase also re-filmed those first couple of scenes so that Glaudini would always be Ciccerone within the show. No trace of Fairuza Balk was left in the world of 'The Sopranos'.

So to splain this away, Toobworld Central makes the claim that God went back to the very moment of conception for both characters and caused a different sperm to reach the egg. And that's why they look so vastly different.

I'm going to make the claim that God turned back Time again within the series finale of 'Lost' as well, but not for the purpose of a recastaway. It was in order to change the course of events during the ultimate battle between Jack and the Locke-ness Monster.

Jack and the Man in Black rushed towards each other and Jack leaped into the air with the intent of landing down upon the fake Locke. And that's when the show cut to a commercial break. But when the show returned, Jack was back up the slope and once again rushing towards Locke. Time was turned back because in the original scenario, Locke must have thrust upwards with his knife as Jack came down and killed him. With Jack dead, the Golden Light would remain extinguished which would have brought an end to the world, not just the Island.

So there was a bit of a reboot and this time Jack's approach varied. He was still stabbed by MiB, but it wasn't immediately fatal. He still had time to fulfill his duties as the Island's guardian by restoring the Light.

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
