Huffington Post slam-dunks writers, as journalists search for higher ground

Just when you thought you knew your way around the Internet, everything changes. This includes three areas: Who you can trust, the danger of ignoring copyrights and giving your carefully-penned word songs away for free, for the sake of the cause, any cause. Although Wikileaks claims most headlines these days, the sale of Huffington Post, made popular by writers working without pay, and new copyright lawsuits for posting news stories on blogs without permission, are important developments for writers, bloggers and everyone on the web. Writing for free quickly became known this week as the way to get duped by big business on the Internet, as AOL announced the purchase of Huffington Post. Read column:

US Diplomats in Wikileaks, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

There's some very important new information leaked in the Wikileaks diplomatic cables. There's also another category of ravings based on the US diplomats tainted view of the world and their imagined truths. These involve a great deal of insults to world leaders in Bolivia, Venezuela, Libya and elsewhere.
There's still another category and these are lies, based on gossip, misinformation and US imperialism. Rigoberta Menchu responded to one of these cables and called the president of Guatemala a "liar." According to the US Ambassador, the Guatemalan president called her a "fabrication" and blamed her for a death, based on her resistance while defending the land. The cables have to be read carefully, and compared to other valid information, to discover what is truth and what is truth for a US diplomatic who may be suffering from isolation, visions of grandeur, paranoia, loneliness, white privilege or racism.
Some of the cables are obviously the truth, like when the US Ambassador in Iceland says that Iceland's support of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, is an "impediment" to US/Iceland relations at the United Nations.
On the other hand, it is difficult to discern the truth of other cables, including the one where the US attempts to deny that the Zetas, the most notorious murderers in Mexico's drug trafficking, were trained by US Special Forces. After being trained by the US as killing machines, they defected and became rogue security for narco traffickers. Although the US Ambassador in Mexico attempts to deny this, it is doubtful that the US actually checked the records of US Special Forces training of Guatemalans and Colombians, in the jungles of South America. But even the US Ambassador admits there's a lack of paper on such training, and that one Mexican special ops trained at Fort Bragg, N.C., was "forcibly" recruited into a life of crime with the Zetas.
"Critics of U.S. military training and conspiracy theorists have long speculated that members of the notoriously violent cartel Los ZETAS once received U.S.-funded special forces training. Since we cannot know the name of every Mexican soldier who has joined Los ZETAS, we cannot irrefutably reject this possibility," said John Feeley, deputy chief at Mexico's Embassy.
Finally, there is a great deal of new information in Wikileaks. Consider this: The US Embassy in Indonesia asked for $100,000 to advertise on Facebook and promote Obama's visit to Indonesia. So, were do such funds, to advertise on Facebook for an elected official, actually come from? The US Embassy asked "R" for those funds.
Along with the new information, there are important details, like how the US trains police in Chile. Chilean police brutally attacked Rapa Nui on Easter Island in December, including women and children. Rapa Nui said the billionaire president of Chile and a German hotel owner on Easter Island are responsible for these attacks on the aboriginal inhabitants of Easter Island.
The Ambassador in Chile pointed to the Easter Islanders. A cable, describing Mapuche activists in Sept. 2009, reveals the US was watching the Easter Islanders: "Meanwhile, another indigenous group -- Easter Islanders -- seem to have been inspired by Mapuche activism, recently occupying the island's only airport for 24 hours in a successful effort to gain government attention to their demands."
And when it comes to the profiteering from war and weapons sales, there's plenty of new info, like how Peru is concerned over US arms sales to Chile.
What Wikileaks has given us in the diplomatic cables is an inside look into the dark recesses of the minds of US diplomats. It is not always a pretty place to be, or an honest one.
There's also plenty of smut there, along with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's now famous command: Get DNA, e-mail passwords, credit card accounts and frequent flyer numbers, on world leaders.

WIKI: US investigates Indigenous Peoples and trains police in Chile

The United States trains Chilean police and the FBI investigates Indigenous Peoples in Chile, according to a Wikileaks cable. Chile expresses concern over the “radicalization” of Chile’s Indigenous Peoples and whether they are funded by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, in the cable dated 2008.

The US training of Chilean police came under scrutiny after Chilean forces attacked Indigenous Peoples, Rapa Nui, on their ancestral lands on Easter Island in December of 2010. The violent and brutal attacks by Chilean police left Rapa Nui wounded.

U.N. Special Rapporteur James Anaya questioned the level of force used against the Indigenous Peoples occupying government buildings and hotels in the main town of Hanga Roa since August 2010.

The Wikileaks cable exposes the paternalism of the Chilean and US officials.

In the cable, US Ambassador Paul Simon wrote that Chile’s Minister of Interior Edmundo Perez Yoma asked the US to “follow the money,” to see if it leads to Chavez, or FARC, and to help with Chile’s “Mapuche issue.”

Ambassador Simons said the US has experience “integrating Indigenous Peoples into the broader society.”

“The U.S. has experience at both national and state levels on the integration of indigenous peoples into the broader U.S. society.”

Ambassador Simons, of course, did not state the path of this integration in the US involved first the murder, rape and genocide of American Indians, followed by the destruction of culture and families by forced attendance in abusive boarding schools, and finally, the continued oppression of Indian people and obliteration of Indian human rights in the United States.

In the cable, Ambassador Simons said he visited the new Minister of Interior, Perez Yoma, with the DEA Chief, on Feb. 6, 2008, exactly one month after Yoma took office.

“Interior Minister Perez Yoma told the Ambassador February 6 that he is concerned about the potential radicalization of Chile's indigenous population, including funding from foreign terrorist groups and/or Venezuela,” Ambassador Simons wrote.

Perez Yoma also asked for details on the US training of Chilean police and security forces, including the national police (Carabineros) and investigative police (Policia de Investigaciones de Chile.) The Ambassador also pointed out that the US FBI was investigating Indigenous Peoples in Chile.

Ambassador Simons said Perez Yoma agreed with him that the bilateral security relationship is excellent.

“He preferred, however, to have his Ministry ‘more fully informed’ concerning the nature and scope of programs offered to Chilean police and security organs by individual USG agencies,” Simons wrote.

Ambassador Simons said the government of Chile would like to draw on U.S. experience in addressing indigenous issues. Perez Yoma said U.S.-Chile cooperation on security matters is excellent but would like his Ministry to serve as a central clearinghouse for coordination between the various agencies of the US and Chile, including training and information sharing.

Simons next comments were titled, “Indigenous Radicals Funded Externally?”

Perez Yoma raised the concern of the "Mapuche issue."

“Chile's largest indigenous group and one that has over the past several months seemingly taken a turn to radical and sometimes violent action (ref B). While intelligence is unclear, funding of the Mapuche by the FARC ‘and Chavez’ is possible although, he noted, he wasn't sure some of the monies aren't being funneled off to other activities since Mapuche radicals remain ‘weak and disorganized.’ Potential Mapuche ties to ETA are also possible,” Ambassador Simons wrote.

"I would like," Perez Yoma said, "your help in following the money."

“RAO Chief noted his agency is working with Chilean colleagues to identify FARC and ETA actors outside Chile who might have potential links to Mapuche radicals. Legatt added that the FBI is coordinating with the Carabineros to assist in identification and potential prosecution of actors within Chile.”

In closing, Ambassador Simons said President Michelle Bachelet was weak on public security.

“Perez Yoma was reportedly brought on as seasoned political operator intended to bring discipline and focus to Bachelet's sometimes unruly administration. As Interior Minister he directs cabinet meetings when Bachelet is not present; press reports suggest he used his first meeting to hammer home the message he is in charge. He was all business in this initial call and very clearly concerned that the Mapuche issue has the potential to underscore Bachelet's perceived weakness on public security, an issue that falls squarely within his bailiwick.”

After this cable was written in 2008, Chilean police brutally attacked the Rapa Nui, Indigenous Peoples in their homeland on Easter Island in 2010, opening fire on the Rapa Nui and injuring women and children.

In a second cable, in September of 2009, Ambassador Simons wrote that Easter Islanders seem to be "inspired by Mapuche activism."

Ambassador Simons wrote, "The August 12 police killing of Mapuche activist Jaime Mendoza -- and the subsequent reaction from indigenous communities -- has catapulted indigenous demands to the front of President Bachelet's political agenda once again. Mapuche activists held protests and blockaded a highway, while more than 3,000 mourners packed Mendoza's funeral. When President Bachelet sent a government delegation, led by the Under Secretary of the Presidency, to meet with all parties in Araucania, the Mapuche community refused to meet with the group. Bachelet subsequently named a cabinet minister, Jose Antonio Viera-Gallo, as the government's new indigenous policy coordinator, effectively capitulating to a long-standing Mapuche demand for higher-level government attention. Meanwhile, another indigenous group -- Easter Islanders -- seem to have been inspired by Mapuche activism, recently occupying the island's only airport for 24 hours in a successful effort to gain government attention to their demands."

The Ambassador continues his criticisms of Indigenous Peopes, their organizations and the Chilean government. He also describes the efforts of Mapuche to reclaim ancestral lands, and how non-Indian land owners gouge land prices and deter new efforts.

"Under Ricardo Lagos (1998-2004), the government approved the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Mapuche areas, despite more than a decade of strenuous objections from Mapuche activists. He later issued a last minute and poorly explained cancellation to what would have been the largest ever meeting between the Mapuche community and the Chilean President, angering thousands who had travelled from across the country for the dialogue," Ambassador Simons wrote.

In a separate cable in 2009, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expresses concern over whether Iran has established contact with Indigenous Peoples in Latin America.

“In addition to national governments, has Iran established ties with any nongovernmental groups or Indigenous Peoples?”

Clinton expressed concern over Iran’s relationship with the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua. The concerns included cultural centers, religious converts and possible training of terrorists in Latin America. Further, she expressed concern over whether Iran could be taking advantage of the dropping of visa requirements by Ecuador and other countries. Clinton asked for more information on Iran’s “enablers,” for the “Iran watchers.”

“Washington analysts assess that Tehran is reaching out to Latin American countries in order to reduce its diplomatic isolation and increase ties to leftist countries in that region that Tehran perceives may share its anti-US agenda," Clinton said.

The US Pentagon is seeking to conceal US war crimes, demanding that Wikileaks remove and return data that exposes the truth of the US war in Afghanistan, including US assassination teams. While the Pentagon ignores the US murderers of civilians and reporters, Wikileaks continues to publish the truth, including unauthorized wiretaps.

Currently on Wikileaks are documents exposing the unauthorized wiretaps of at least 12 Mohawks.

"On June 29, 2007 a group of Mohawks from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory blocked the CN Railway Line running through their territory, the Highway 401, and Highway 2 to protest conditions on Native reserves across Canada and the Government of Canada's sluggishness in resolving outstanding land claims. Blockade spokesman Shawn Brant faces multiple charges stemming from these actions, and the Crown prosecutor is currently seeking a 12 year minimum sentence.

"During the preliminary inquiry to Shawn Brant's trial, it came out that the Ontario Provincial Police, headed by Commissioner Julian Fantino, had been using wiretaps on more than a dozen different Mohawks without a judge's authorization, an action almost unheard of recent history in Canada. Those conversations between Julian Fantino and Shawn Brant were presented as testimony during the pre-trial hearing."

With the risk of censorship, whistleblowers are urged by human rights activists to post more documents on Wikileaks concerning the truth of the US-manufactured border racism, private prison profiteering and environmental genocide toward people of color in the US.

Indian country has long been targeted with uranium mining, coal-fired power plants and oil and gas drilling, leaving generations of Native Americans with cancer and respiratory disease.

New carbon sequestration, which would store toxic CO2 from coal-fired power plants in Mother Earth on the Hopi Nation, is the latest sinister corporate attack. Today, Friday, August 6, Hopis gather in Hotevilla, after the Hopi Tribal Council approved this controversial experiment without community support.

New nuclear power funding under the Obama administration targets black communities in Georgia with the high risk of nuclear power plants. Navajo, Lakota and other American Indians are currently fighting new uranium mining that will poison their underground water supplies. Western Shoshone and Goshute have been targeted with nuclear dumping, while the US is aware that there is no safe method to store nuclear waste.

Globally, Indigenous Peoples' land' are targeted with mining and the legacy of death.

Peabody Coal's orchestration of the so-called Navajo Hopi land dispute resulted in the relocation of more than 14,000 Navajos and decades of misery for Navajo families who continue to resist relocation without support from the Navajo Nation government. The removal of Navajos made way for Peabody coal mines.

Canada is the homebase of the largest number of mining companies responsible for the assassinations of Indigenous activists around the world, from South America to Australia, Africa and Asia, opposing the destruction of their homelands.

On the US/Mexico border, the racism and xenophobia fueled by politicians and the US media has resulted in profiteering for private prison corporations, including CCA (Corrections Corporation of America) and GEO.

Boeing and other border wall contractors, drone manufacturers and Wackenhut Transportation are among those reaping the financial benefits and profits of the US war on migrants. (The Wackenhut corporation split into GEO and Wackenhut Transportation, resulting in two corporations, now profiteering from private prisons and the transportation of migrants in custody.)

In Arizona, Pinal County boasts that private prison profiteer CCA is the largest employer. Arizona is also home of court-documented racial profiling of American Indians at traffic stops and where American Indians and all people of color are imprisoned at rates higher than whites.

With the US militarization of the border region, Indigenous Peoples in their homelands, from California to Texas, are under attack by the US Border Patrol, police and US military, all targeting people of color. The US is criminalizing the right of Indigenous Peoples to travel in their homelands at the southern border, including the Kumeyaay, Cocopah, Tohono O'odham, Yaqui, Apache, Ysleta del Sur and Lipan Apache.

It is known that Boeing violated NAGPRA and other federal laws during border wall construction when the graves of O'odham ancestors were dug up on Tohono O'odham land.

Whistleblowers are asked to expose other violations of federal law and post documents on Wikileaks. These include the destruction of graves, abuse and murder of migrants, theft of Indian country resources (by way of leases or manipulated measurement devices), bribes to elected American Indian tribal officials by polluting corporations and abuse of power by US Border Patrol and police.

The relationship of the US border wall to Israel's Apartheid Wall in Palestine was exposed when Boeing subcontracted Elbit Systems for surveillance at the Arizona border. Elbit is Israel's defense contractor, responsible for the human rights travesty of maintaining security and surveillance on Palestine.

Now, in the pursuit of truth, Wikileaks has defied the US Pentagon and exposed US assassinations and reckless murder. These rogue assassination teams in Afghanistan and Iraq have murdered reporters and large numbers of civilians without consequence.

Hopefully, this act of courage by Wikileaks will have a ripple affect, and cause others to arise with fearlessness.

Hopefully, the US attempt at censorship, and murder without consequence, will backfire.

During the preliminary inquiry to Shawn Brant's trial, it came out that the Ontario Provincial Police, headed by Commissioner Julian Fantino, had been using wiretaps on more than a dozen different Mohawks without a judge's authorization, an action almost unheard of recent history in Canada. Those conversations between Julian Fantino and Shawn Brant were presented as testimony during the pre-trial hearing.
The Crown obtained a publication ban during the preliminary inquiry, which was challenged last week by the Canadian Broadcasting Company after they found out that the O.P.P. had officers posing as cameramen during the Day of Action, a tactic that has recently been condemned by the Ipperwash Inquiry.
The publication ban was lifted by a judge on Thursday, July 17th, 2008. A number of news agencies published initial analysis on the testimony. The next day, July 18th, the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered the publication ban re-instated until an appeal hearing next week.
The attached zip file includes:
