UN Queries Native Americans about Human Rights

Every four years, the United Nations reviews the human rights records of its members. The UN wants to hear specifically from Native American leaders on whether the U.S. is meeting its obligations to indian tribes.

State Department officials spent Tuesday at UNM Law School in Albuquerque gathering feedback from tribal representatives from as far away as Alaska and New York.

Some tribal officials say they have several concerns including what they are calling a lack of fulfillment on treaties involving education, health care, and welfare.

As part of the review, Native American groups will be invited to speak directly to the United Nations some time this summer.

Today: Wednesday, March 17: Listening session in Window Rock, Arizona.
