Dheinland: Scene Prototype
As some of you know, I am working on a setting/module for Errant called Dheinland. This module will incorporate some innovative presentation styles. On of these styles will be called Scenes. Scenes will be presented in contrast to the sandbox style of the rest of the setting/module. They provide the GM with a way to intervene when the players lack self-direction.
Scenes will be self-contained mini-plots broken into several Events, which are times when the GM is actively pushing the plot forward. Between events, the players have time to talk amongst themselves, get their gear prepared, etc. During the event, they are being kinda swept along. Each scene will also contain a Trigger, or set of conditions necessary to begin the whole thing. There are other minor elements like XP awards and such.
One of the things I am really trying to do with scenes is eliminate both the Fetch-&-Retrieve Quest concept and the Save-the-World Quest concept from my module. It is actually really hard. Without an overarching quest, players can lose direction and focus. But the prevailing concept for mini-quests or side-quests is fetch-and-retrieve. So I am trying to provide managable, smaller chunks of drama that can be added/removed by the GM as desired to shake things up, introduce more NPCs, and so on.
Here is the prototype that I have been working on. It is only a 4 page PDF, sorry no pics yet.
Thoughts on this organizational style? Do you think it fulfills my objectives?
