Great Villains

What makes a great villain? I think several things are important.

1. Represents a fundamental danger that cannot be ignored and grows in power over time.

2. Important to the game world in a way that their destruction will have it's own negative consequences or require taking actions that violate the characters' moral principles.

3. Unpredictable behavior that only later appears to be part of a pattern or strategy.

4. Proactive and aggressive, engaged in offensive action that leaves little room for the characters to catch their breath and husband their resources.

5. Possesses knowledge of the characters' own weaknesses in a way that makes them very difficult to capture, kill, or neutralize.

6. Hesitation to kill the characters, preferring instead to watch them suffer and fail repetitively.

Of course, I think the Joker represents the perfect villain with respect to the above principles, hence the picture.
