A Turning Point
I was thinking tonight about how Braveheart represents a turning point to me in film and in the presentation of the medieval period. It is possible, nigh even probable, that Braveheart was not the first to do this in history, but it was the first film for ME to do it.
Braveheart was the first film I ever saw where they really presented the gritty realistic down-in-the-dirty bloody melee combat. Not just on a battlefield but man-to-man. Ideas like Honor, Chivalry, Knighthood; all cast aside into the dirt. This is a common man fighting a dirty fight with the tools available.
It many ways this film permanently and irrevocably changed how I thought about the time period and the fantasy games that are set on it.
The soundtrack is also excellent, by the way. It was my gateway drug in another way, opening my mind to epic movie soundtracks. Braveheart represents the keystone of my collection; everything from Last of the Mohicans to Dark Knight.
So drink deep tonight, in honor of the blue eyed Scotsman (okay, Aussie pretending to be a Scotsman).
