Thinking Outside the Box

The Alexandrian has a nice post up today about the economy of supplement production. Dave Cesarano also makes an excellent point about the quality of TSR supplements compared to WotC, something very similar to what I have been saying myself for quite some time.

My reaction to the thesis of the post though is not about TSR vs WotC, but how come in the 30 years of RPGs that we now have under our belt, we are still producing the same product types?

- Rulebooks
- Setting Books
- Modules
- Niche Supplements (i.e. Splatbooks).

When is someone going to think up something outside of these four concepts?

Note: due to the lateness of the hour and the quality of my readers, I am certain someone will come up with some 5th idea that I forgot. Ignore them! It doesn't change my point! :)
