Setting Up the Novarium

A portion of text written today for the Campaign Management book.

The Novarium is not just a collection of characters; it is a shared enterprise. Each character has their own personal property, which encompasses everything they are carrying and anything within their Sanctum, and everything else possessed by the group is considered communal property of the Novarium.

Territory
The Novarium is gifted a few acres of land when they accept responsibility for the Mark. All land in Coynne is measured in acres, a unit that denotes the amount of land that a single ox is capable of tilling in one day. Typically this initial land grant will not exceed a few dozen acres because the Exarch making the grant must actually purchase the land from the noble holding title to the area and they will not purchase much more land than is covered by the Eminence extending out from the Prime Font.

The initial plot may be capable of supporting the Novarium through small scale agriculture like one might see around a monastery, but it will generally not be high quality arable land suitable for large-scale agricultural development. Fonts are typically found in areas with rough and uneven terrain and this makes the situation even more difficult from an agrarian perspective.

Structures
A number of buildings may exist on the property already or the GM may simply provide a larger monetary outlay in the offer to allow the characters to pay for the construction of rudimentary dwellings. All non-Novarii characters may live in the same dwelling in close quarters. However, every Novarii must have their own Sanctum and they will insist upon it.

Sanctum
Every Novarii has a personal space of their own called a Sanctum.

Typically this is a free standing structure, similar in design to a house or cabin. Alternatively, it may be a part of a larger structure provided there is a clear boundary that defines their space. For example, if the Novarium took up residence in an ancient Dwarven fortress underground, each Novarii may take several rooms as their own personal space and lock all the doors leading into that portion of the structure.

The Sanctum is considered a sacrosanct division and anyone who enters it without permission is automatically considered to have hostile intent. Therefore a Novarii is always considered to be justified in inflicting violence, including fatal violence, on anyone in their Sanctum. The only exception to this is a Novarii that has been declared a profigate by the Order.

Library
The Novarium collectively owns a library of magical books that they share for research purposes. These books can be acquired from other Novarii in the game world, if an agreed price can be reached, but such commerce should occur off-map via couriers. The majority of books in the library should ideally be unique books written by the Novarium members or books recovered from the lost portions of the Mark through adventuring. A well-developed library eventually serves as a lure to attract Novarii from other regions to study. The Novarium is free to demand a fee that must be paid before another Novariii may research in their library, either in coin or Essence. This may provide supplemental income to support the Novarium.
