Fair Weather Friend

I have spoken a lot on my blog in the last few days about the beach, sand and the surf. I should apologize to those blog readers who live in areas where the weather was not as great as it was in Florida. While I was posting, tweeting and blogging away in the warm sunshine, some of you were rusting away in a cold drizzle. I feel for you.
I knew maybe I had rubbed some people the wrong way with my constant surf side updates when Mr. Bricks tweeted me that he hoped I got sand in my sneakers. (if you do not follow me yet on Twitter you can follow me @avaaston)
My hopes are that you do not hold my vacation against me and treat me as a "fair- weather" friend. A fair-weather friend is the type who is always there when times are good but forgets about you when things get difficult or problems crop up. The Urban Dictionary describes it as, "A friend who is only a friend when circumstances are pleasant or profitable. At the first sign of trouble, these capricious, disloyal friends will drop their relationship with you."
But that is so, not me. Keep in mind I am the same Greek girl who was freezing her noggin off with the rest of the nation for the months of November, December, January, February and March! I think I am entitled to 10 days of sunshine without anyone bailing on me for this little time I have spent defrosting in the Florida sunshine.
I am excited to start heading back to the salt mines. I have left Mr. Bricks alone minding the candy store for way too long. I think that is why he tweeted me the nastygram about sand in my sneakers.  Maybe Mr. Bricks is a fair-weather manager???
Blessings,
Ava

Watch Your Back Mr. Groundhog

Bill Murray in "Ground Hog Day"
I am sick of winter. It started snowing yesterday at about 8:00AM and it never stopped. I've been a Miss Greek Grumpy Pants since then because I am so over winter this year. And it's only late January.
"I do not like it when it snows. I do not like my frozen toes. I do not like when cold wind blows, I do not like that my house pipes froze." Ava Aston - Winter 2011
That white crap outside that is falling from the sky put a big damper on all of the things I had planned:
  • I can not just hop in my car and get a cup of Dunkin Donuts Coffee
  • I can not go for a nice 5  mile run with my iPod and sneakers
  • I can not go shopping at the outlets at the Woodbury Commons
  • I can not spend the Kohls' cash that is burning a hole in my pocket
  • I can not just let my dogs just outside to pee
I would love to be somewhere tropical right now. Somewhere with 85ยบ where I can be in shorts, flips flops and a t-shirt. But no, I'm rolling in New York looking like a wooly mammoth all bundled up in a hat, scarf, my fluffy blanket coat and mittens. That is so messed up. Here are 5 things I can think of that you can do in this weather:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
That's right nothing. Nadda, zip, zero!
Greek Girl Trivia: The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Mr. Bricks say it was a very festive celebration, but he doesn't remember a whole lot since he was just a kid way back then.
I'm hoping that next Monday February 2nd Punxsutawney Phil doesn't see his nappy ass shadow, because if he does, I'll be the Blonde Greek Girl who will hunt down the fat little rodent with my daddy's rifle - he will be in my crosshairs - just sayin'
Blessings,
Ava

Frosted Flakes and Hot Cocoa

This an open letter to Old Man Winter
Dear OMW:
I know who you are, and I know what you are doing. This isn't my first time at the rodeo.
Each year you waltz into my life as if we were lost lovers. News flash you're not my BFF, I would never friend you on  Facebook and if you're looking for a tweet from me on Twitter you're in for a long wait.  You're in the weather business, have you ever heard of the expression, "When Hell freezes over?"...I'm just sayin'
Oh sure, we had a little courtship when I was 4 years old and I would run outside to greet you.  I would draw pictures of a heart on the iced over car windows and I really loved to make angels in the freshly fallen snow you left me. You were a cool guy back then and I liked hanging around you. You made things so different for me from the long hot summers I had to endure living in upstate New York. Yah, I thought you were fun and cool, but what did I know about relationships back then? I was just a baby, I was still drooling on myself for crying out loud.
But I have grown up a lot since then Mr. Winter, and I do not like you or your best friend Jack Frost. Both of you literally send chills up my spine.
Do you know because of you, I must swap out  my entire wardrobe once a year? I'm a girl, if you haven't noticed Mr. Winter. I can't just throw on an extra old Nike T-shirt or wear a flannel shirt like a boy can. I need totally different clothes whenever you come around.  That's why I must have a whole separate closet just to accommodate all the things you put me through. Do you have any idea how expensive that is Mr. Winter? Do you even care Mr. Winter? I doubt it.  You have never even offered to pay off my Kohls' bill each winter....some gentleman you are.
So guess what I had to do today, Mr. Winter? I had to spend several hours of my valuable time swapping out my clothes from one closet to another. I knew it was time to do it because I have seen you lurking around my neighborhood. You are not so sneaky anymore in your old age Mr. Winter. I know you are stalking me because I can see the evidence you are back in town. There's the leaves on the ground, the long lines at the tire store and the snot running down little kid's noses. The evidence is there and it's all because of you. I hope you're happy, old man.
And now you are just teasing me with the beautiful fall days we had this weekend.  A nice crisp nip in the air is fine, in fact, it's perfect for my daily run. But a nor'easter blowing through town...not so much fun. I know how nasty you can be. I am a girl. I don't forget crap like that. I know you think I still want to court you, but I don't. It's over!
I have a new man in my life.  And today I'm going to sit down in front of the fireplace with my Sweetie, wearing a newly discovered sweater from my "winter" clothes while I sip a cup of hot cocoa.
Signed,
Ava
