I just realized that with the magic system I am designing, I have a plausible explanation for the state of the universe as a whole, instead of one riddled with illogical contradictions like what currently exists in D&D. One that requires no actual gods be true, but allows for magic and so on.
So you start with a multi-planar universe. One of these planes is the Material Plane. On this plane exists a single race, the Elves. These creatures develop the ability to open up one-way portals to the other planes that bring forth all sorts of beings; humans, dwarves, orcs, goblins, monsters of all types, elementals, demons, etc. Most of the time, they went back home after a short duration. But some Elves developed ways of keeping them around... bargaining with them.... and eventually they escaped. Some learned the magic themselves and brought more of their kind with them. Some brought other beings in as their own pets. Now you have all these uncontrolled sources of input into this Elven world, which is being overrun by monsters and in need of heroes. Of course, most people in this world do not have the slightest clue about these original events...
The creators of all the planes, the origins of the magic, not really relevant. So long as it works, right? Any more than we need to understand the source of gravity to know how to use it to our advantage.
Interesting..... I like the way this magic system is developing.....
