Observations about Religion & Gaming

I have been pondering the whole Angels/Demons/God/Devil thing lately as a result of this new project, and I have noticed something.

The height of D&D as a cultural phenomenon was when they had no qualms about talking about fighting demons and devils. Then they started changing them to Tanarii and what not.

Diablo is perhaps the most successful game in terms of bringing people into the CRPG hobby, especially from a Multiplayer angle. Sure, there are some people who played Ultima Online and what not, but Diablo was the big-boy. Diablo made WoW possible.

Fighting demonic forces is really a core staple of RPG's origins. Why are so many people running away from that? Why is there such hesitation to really emphasize strong religious elements like that?

I am not afraid of the big BADD wolf. Bring it.
