Spend Money Like It's 1999

Goods costing $100 in 1999  would cost $135 today according to the Consumer Price Index
I can see where gas is coming down in price, but not nearly as quickly as it went up. That's just messed up. Unlike gas prices, when grocery store prices go up they never come back down. Hang onto your checkbook and let the Greek girl take you on a shopping trip down memory lane  - circa 1999.
  • In 1999 the average cost of a gallon of gas was $1.22
  • Average Cost of new house $131,750.00
  • Average Income per year $40,810.00
  • Average Monthly Rent $645.00
  • Average cost of new car $21,050.00
  • US Postage Stamp 33 cents
  • 1 LB of Bacon $2.59
  • Ground Coffee per LB $3.41
  • Loaf of Bread $1.49
  • Dozen Eggs 89 cents
  • Gold was $290 an ounce
  • Silver was $5.50 an ounce
  • Sony Discman  $69.00 (iPods didn't come out until 2001)
  • 2 litre bottle of Pepsi  69 cents
  • RCA VCR $99.99 (DVD players were just barely coming out)
  • Asparagus  $2.49/lb
  • New Balance Sneakers   $77.99 pair
  • 2 lb bag of fresh carrots 98 cents
I know the economy is tough when my manager Mr. Bricks also starts pinching pennies. In 1999 a McRib Value meal would set Mr. Bricks back only $2.99.   In some circles (read as in some coffee shops and diners) Mr. Bricks has the nickname of Mr. Big because when not eating McRibs at McDonalds he often tipped well north of 20% when enjoying a meal at a coffee shop or diner. If the waitress laughs at his jokes the tip can be well north of 30% and if the waitress flatters him, ie (have you lost weight? I hardly recognized you Mr. Bricks...or did they fix your eye? It doesn't look as droopy today!) then she could get a 40% tip. Word.
Blessings,
Ava

PS: For all of my Greek friends you will remember that 1999 was a sad year because a powerful, magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Athens, killing 143 people

The Devil Wears Prada, The Greek Girl Wears Sneakers

Prada's Spring and Summer Collection
I think I want to marry the weatherman. I am back in New York and as we approach a holiday weekend it appears that the weather will be just perfect for some alone time with my sneakers.

Now that's what I am talking about. Not too hot, not too cold, just perfect for some beautiful running throughout America's greatest city and to check out some of the newest fashions!

If I want to head to Prada's flagship store I need to point my sneakers to 575 Broadway  (at Prince) in SoHo.  I won't be able to miss it because not every retail store has a Rem Koolhaas' designed 23,000 square foot $40 million dollar building! Nice.
When I am done in SoHo I can take a quick jog up near Central Park to 841 Madison Avenue and check out that Prada store. Yah, that's what I think I will do even if I have to cheat a little and hail a cab.
But all running and no shopping is not fun, so I will make sure to stop when I am in Midtown Manhattan and check out the Prada stores located at 45 East 57th Street, 724 5th Ave and the one located at 611 5th Avenue. I hear they have some really nice boots...Not that I wanna make my sneakers jealous, but  a Greek Girl needs her boots too - just sayin'
That's what my weekend is shaping up to be like. We all will be celebrating differently. Many of you will have cook outs and barbecues, and while I am out running and shopping Mr. Bricks will no doubt be eating McRibs, ordering Dominos Pizza and cheering on his favorite driver Danica Patrick while watching the Indy 500 and then watching NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600.  So how will you be spending your upcoming Memorial Day Weekend? No matter what you do, I hope you enjoy it!
Blessings,
Ava

Has a Blog Crush Gone too Far?

Example of acting out on a Blog Crush
I have met many nice people since I started blogging and 99.9% of them have been really cool.  The other .01% I just write off as mucked up trolls.
I like meeting other bloggers and quite often I find their blogs very well written and much funnier than mine. So much so that they make me laugh my Greek butt off. One such funny blog (which is very cleverly written) is by Cassie Behle.  Cassie recently posted a blog entitled Reported Cases of the Mondays Doubled in US Since 2008. Check it out, it's really funny.
The power of the blogosphere also makes for very strange bedfellows. After I complimented Cassie about her blog post being hysterical she responded back to me with a kind comment about one of my blog posts. Like other Social Media Connections (SMC) it quickly became a mutual admiration society between the two of us. Kind of like a virtual pat on each other's back.
As I currently do with many of my other fellow blogging SMC's, Cassie and I continued to comment back and forth on each others blogs. But that is where a normal Blogger to Blogger Friendship (BTBF) took a creepy turn.  Because if I wouldn't know better, I would think that Cassie has a Big Blog Crush (BBC) on my manager Mr. Bricks. And now a couple of weeks later she is openly flirting with him in her comments to me. Look at her increased attention to Mr. Bricks in each of the following comments and tell me what you think. Am I right?
Here is one of Cassie's first comments about my blog about 3 weeks ago:
"Dear Ms. Aston, I really enjoyed your blog today. It was super funny. I loved the way you typed Mr. Bricks' name in the blog.  Just seeing his name on my computer screen makes me light up like the milkyway. I mean the galaxy, not the candy bar."
Then there was this one about two weeks ago...
"Hey Ava, when I get out of bed in the mornings the first thing I do, even before my morning coffee, is read your blog. I just love to see what Muckery Mr. Bricks has gotten into in the past 24 hours. Poor guy. I hope you are treating him well.  - Cassie"
Then just the other day this tell-tale comment arrived from Cassie:
" Hey Greek Girl - I wonder if you have ever thought about the fact that you might be hurting Mr. Bricks' feelings with the way you talk about him and diss him in your blog. He seems like such a warm & sensitive guy. It would just crush my little Mid-Western heart to know that Mr. Bricks had a tear coming from his one lazy eye and there was no one to wipe it from his face.  - Cassie"
Ok, see what I am saying? So, I am thinking, what's wrong with this girl's coconut? Has Cassie really read anything I have ever written about my McRib loving manager and all of the Muckery he causes in my life and career? Does this well-meaning girl from Nebraska realize that Mr. Bricks thinks it is fashionable to take his large framed body to a beach wearing nothing but a Speedo? That is just not correct. And does Cassie know that Mr. Bricks has yet to get me a record deal? Hello.
Oh, Good Gravy (OGG) I think I need to do a Blog Crush Intervention (BCI) on Cassie.
Blessings,
Ava

My First Sold Out Concert

I am so excited about my new web-based cartoon series that I am callingAva the Diva.It will give you a glimpse of what life is like behind the velvet ropes of the music industry through the eyes of a total Diva.  So everyone will finally get to see what Mr. Bricks is really, really like. Can you believe Mr. Bricks accepted my payment for a concert in McRib sandwiches, instead of cash. See what I am talking about? See what the Greek girl must endure. You try walking a mile in my iron sneaker with old man Bricks around. It is not easy.
This first story of Ava the Diva is in two parts. You will have to wait until next week to see Part 2 and see what happens, you wont believe it!!!!! Trust me when I say there will be plenty of muckery. These new cartoons will be posted on my Youtube channel, as well as you will be able to see them at my new GoAnimate channel:
If you like what you see, you can help me out by spreading the word and sharing the cartoon. It is my hope that this will generate enough interest to be able to have the opportunity to do an Ava the Diva animated series on a TV network.
Enjoy,
Blessings,
Ava

FACEBOOK WILL END ON MARCH 15th!

The Weekly World News has the exclusive on this story!!
Facebook to end March 15th!
I saw this website  and I peed my pants.....not at the absurdity of the headlines, but that actual human beings who were typing comments pleading Facebook not to shut down. OMG. For reals people?
Here are a few choice comments left at the site. I had to correct spelling and grammar on some of them just so you could understand the actual comment -just sayin':
  • "Don't ever close this website. It's part of my life, dude!!!"
  • "After what they know already about all our life?"
  • "I hope its not. :S I love Facebook. :S"
  • "Life without Facebook will never be the same"
  • "Noooooooo plz plz plz don't I love everything about facebook its my life I have a lot of friend btw out of the fb but for example I have 7 friends that are are out of town and they are going to live their forever how can I comunicate with them again just plz plz plz don't close facebook I play games and I chat I do every thing plz don't"
  • "Why did u guys decide to close it soooooo soon1 its not fair, pliiiiiiiise don't close facebook, what will my life become without facebook? plise think again! or is that not a joke? please let it be a joke! u cant just close facebook its millions of peoples life what are we suppose o do now? and our friends?"
  • "plz dont dlete it plz friend we awlll devided into many parts plz we love each other plz :("  <--- I didn't correct that comment because I have no idea what they were even saying.
  • "I think that Facebook is being blackmailed by Twitter"
  • "PlesEeeeeeeeeeeee don't shut down fb.......we beg u.....der r people who can't leave without fb.........am 1 of them....if ur agreeing I will buy this siteeee" <--just a hunch, this person can't afford a popsicle let alone buying Facebook.
  • "Closing Facebook down? My life will change:("
  • "NOOOOOOOO. Please don't close Facebook, that is how I get all of the real news."
And my all time favorite one is...

"My babies' mommas are on there man. Don't do me like that dog."

This obviously bogus story is sad for many reasons. First off, so many people are addicted to Facebook like a fat boy is to a chocolate cake, or as in closer to the Greek Blonde girl's life, many people are addicted to Facebook like my manager Mr. Bricks is addicted to the McRib sandwich.
The other sad part about this is that we are all bombarded with so much information it is hard for some people to know what is real news and what is fake news? We also wonder how people can get sucked into those Nigerian email scams and lose all of their life savings. We wonder how the world can be glued to their TV sets like we were when a crying mom goes on national TV saying her son is floating away in a spaceship balloon.   And now we need to wonder how anyone can possibly believe Facebook is closing down on March 15th.
To quote Mr. Bricks favorite hero, P.T. Barnum, "There's sucker born every minute."
Blessings,
Ava

Predictions for 2011

Oh no....really?
Wrapping a white bath  towel around my blonde hair to give myself the best swami appearance.... Here are the Greek girl's predictions for 2011.
  1. Lindsay Lohan will be arrested for possession of drugs
  2. Lindsay Lohan will avoid jail time by crying and asking for rehab
  3. Lindsay Lohan will get released from rehab and make a mockery of the court system
  4. See number #1
  5. The state of California will declare bankruptcy
  6. The state of California will be purchased from the US bankruptcy court by a Mexican drug cartel
  7. 3 random celebrities will die within a short period of time of each other
  8. I will get a record deal ( right Mr. Bricks?)
  9. CBS will change the meaning of their corporate name to (CBS) Complete Bull Shit
  10. NBC and ABC will follow suit with their name changes to (NBC)  Never Been Correct and (ABC) Always Bull Crap
  11. My blog will not win a Pulitzer Prize
  12. Sneakers will become all of the rage at NY's Fashion Week
  13. McDonald's will introduce the "Double McRib" - 2 fake processed pork patties in BBQ sauce with pickles and onions on a toasted bun. My manager Mr. Bricks will be their first customer
  14. I will get to 25,000 "likes" on my Facebook Fan Page
  15. My dog Punkin will hijack my blog again
  16. TSA will get a smack down after a pat down with the Hell's Angels
  17. John Walsh and America's Most Wanted will announce they found Osama Bin Laden. Amazingly, he was living in Washington DC and had a job with an eight figures a year salary in the Obama Administration as an advisor on Muslim tolerance in America
  18. General Mills will rescind their Don't Ask Don't Tell policy about their cereal mascots much to the liking of the Lucky Charms dude and the Trix rabbit
  19. The ESPN executive who approved a tv special about the paper, rock, scissors national championships will be promoted to Head of Programming at MTV
  20. With the success of Michael Jackson's latest CD, Madonna will have herself declared legally dead to help boost her lackluster sales
  21. The Biggest Loser TV show will be cancelled because Michelle Obama solved the nation's obesity problem by making the sales of Girl Scout thin mint cookies illegal
  22. The surprise reveal on Oprah's final show will be that she isn't retiring. Oprah will also shock her audience by announcing that she will pay off the home mortgages for everyone in the country
  23. A sex tape will be leaked starring Miley Cyrus. The title of the video will be "Hannah Banana Fe Fi Fo Montana"
  24. All 12,200 Burger King outlets in 73 countries will be permanently closed by the FDA because they serve beef and it offended one Muslim woman in Boise, Idaho. A similar claim against Wendy's will be dismissed when the FDA determines that Wendy's doesn't use real meat in their products
  25. My blogs throughout 2011 will continue to be filled with useless trivia, accounts of my day-to-day muckery, jabs at my manager Mr. Bricks and yes some typos from time to time. Would you want it any other way?
These are just my predictions -- I might not get them all right, but I feel really strong about most of them! Hopefully you enjoyed my light-hearted blog today and it was my sincerest desire that I made you smile on this Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Blessings,
Ava

Hell's Kitchen

Tonight was another episode of Fox's reality series, Hell's Kitchen. For those of you who have never watched it the premise is simple: Invite 10 -12 wannabe head chiefs to be filmed getting screamed at and cursed at because the risotto is under cooked or the scallops are raw. End of story. But I'm not talking about that Hell's Kitchen.

This would be a real red-neck's actual kitchen, and to me that would also be a Hell's Kitchen or a kitchen from Hell, not sure which. Either way, I'm not talking about that kitchen either.

I'm talking about my own Hell's Kitchen -- Greek style. And not because I'm a master chef, because I'm not. Most of the meals I cook are healthy for you and fairly simple meals. Like this one.

This would be one of my yummo dinners that is made in Greek blonde girl's kitchen. It has just the right amount of protein and carbs, everything my body needs to keep me going. Remember when I work out two hours a day, I need to cook the right foods to properly fuel my body. I know not everyone puts cottage cheese on a baked potato, but if you haven't tried it, you should. It is much healthier for you than gobs of butter, bacon, sour cream and cheddar cheese. And if you salt and pepper your baked potato just try and limit the amount of salt. Massive amounts of sodium in your body plays havoc on you when you want to get into those skinny jeans.

OK, so if the meals I make in my own kitchen (or made by my Sweetie) are healthy and no one is cussing or throwing things then why do I consider it Hell's Kitchen you might ask? Let me tell you why. I can explain in two simple words - Mr. Bricks

It seems that my manager Mr. Bricks has some of the strangest eating habits known to man (and some not known to man).  From time to time I send him pictures of what a really healthy meal looks like. He then calls me gagging, saying that the picture I just text him made him vomit a little in his throat. It seems he has these really warped guidelines bout what can be served in the kitchen. Here are a few of his bizarre eating habits and rules about food:

1. No hot liquids. The dude is a freak. Mr. Bricks doesn't eat soups or drink coffee, hot tea or hot chocolate...none of it. I do not know how he even functions without coffee. That alone makes me suspicious if he is really even human.

2. You can not mix food groups on top of each other. That is why he has an issue with putting the cottage cheese on the baked potato.

3. Corn is the only edible vegetable as a side dish. Vegetables in salad can only be tomatoes and lettuce. and it can only be iceberg lettuce in the salad, no romaine lettuce or spinach allowed. Wouldn't you know iceberg lettuce is the least nutritional of all of the lettuces.

4.  Diet Coke is a food group and can be consumed at any meal.

5. Oh wait, another issue is that you can not mix hot and cold foods...I'm tellin' you -- C-R-A-Z-Y.

One time I invited him over for a breakfast meeting at my house. When I thought he wasn't looking I put some protein powder in the waffle mix. I was hoping to get something good into his body for once. Well, I might as well killed his dog. He ate the waffles, but he wasn't too happy about having to eat healthy waffles. He should be thankful that I had even bought pure maple syrup for the occasion. I normally buy the healthy sugar free kind and not the stuff with 10,000 calories per serving. Hey, I am on stage in front of the public all the time and I don't want to have a butt the size of Montana -- just sayin'

No more home cooked meals for Mr. Bricks because it's like Hell in the kitchen trying to cook something that he likes.  That is... unless I go and get a McRib from McDonald's and serve it to him on a plate (but that is never happening).

Blessings,

Ava
