Mint Carnations

I made myself use these mint colored carnations because I unfortunately think the color is so ugly. But I am changing my mind slowly.
My autumn arrangement is growing on me. :)

Paul Owns the Sabre: Carrying the torch with art

By Brenda Norrell
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Paintings by Paul Owns the Sabre, Lakota from Cheyenne River, S.D., went on display Sunday at the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, Calif. Owns the Sabre spoke on the cultural genocide underway in the United States and the horror of boarding schools for Indian people. Owns the Sabre said he will hold a special giveaway and give all his paintings away, as they were not done for money. He encouraged Indian youths to learn their songs and their language, and to do their art. The reception included a meal of buffalo stew and fry bread and songs by the All Nation Singers. Among the guests were Long Walkers Harry, Aisyln, Tomas and Brenda, who accompanied Owns the Sabre on the Longest Walk northern route across America in 2008. In a tribute to Owns the Sabre, it was pointed out that he had undertaken a lifetime of walks and runs across America. The show of paintings continues through Dec. 13. Photo Brenda Norrell

Shoshone Grandmothers to Barrick Gold: 'This is Treaty Land!'

CRESCENT VALLEY -- Western Shoshone protested Barrick Gold and demanded a halt to the destruction, as Barrick rips up the pine trees on sacred Mount Tenabo by the roots.
Writer Lisa Wolf conveys the comments of Shoshone to the perpetrators of genocide on this sacred mountain. As Barrick's global assault on Indigenous territories continues, the Shoshone have filed a court action to halt the desecration now underway on Mount Tenabo.
The Western Shoshone grandmothers told the Barrick employee, “This is our treaty land. It was a treaty made with the federal government. It was not made with a foreign nation. And it is a foreign mining company that has come into our country and is destroying our mountain, our land, our food, our medicine and they have no respect.”
Shoshone Elder Bernice Lalo said, “I came here because from our beliefs that we practice here on the land, we’re protesting because they will be destroying the pine trees which is very important to the land. We’re protesting because this is our land. No two ways about it; and when they come and destroy things, they’re destroying our spirituality, our ways, our beliefs” for “our children, our children’s children. So, we’re all here to protest that” because “it can’t go on. It’s perpetrating genocide against the Native American people. And we are not the only Native people suffering this distress. It is happening world over; but we happen to be Western Shoshones and this is our land and we’re protesting the poisoned water, the destruction of the land, the road we’re standing on here, the big machines: everything that the mining industry stands for. They say they’re doing it responsibly, but they’re not because when they leave the Western Shoshone people will still be here and the land will be barren.” Lalo said, “They reclaim something, but only with weeds and mounds like a big burial ground and that’s what they’re leaving us. And they’re never going to clean it out.”
Carrie Dann told Fennemore, “We want the tree cutting stopped now,” explaining, “That’s our food.”
Mary Gibson asked the Barrick employee, “What are you leaving for your grandchildren? Where is your heart? Where is that? Do you understand how important this is? This is our life.”
Dann said, “When you destroy the earth, where is the food coming from?”
One of the Grandmothers suggested, “You guys go and tear down the Vatican, the Mormon Tabernacle” which “actually have things stored. Because that’s what you’re doing to us for gold.” Read more of the Western Shoshone comments to the perpetrators of genocide:

A CLUSTER OF GUSTERS

So 'Psych' returned for a special holiday episode this past week, and delivered the Toobworld equivalent of coal in our stocking - a Zonk!

Zonks are those pesky discrepancies which play hob with the integrity of the TV Universe. Usually it's a reference to another TV show as a TV show, when both shows should be co-existing in the same dimension. However, this time it was the classic "Darrin Discrepancy", a recastaway, in which a character is now played by a new actor with no splainin made for the change in his appearance.
In this case, Gus' Dad, who was played once before by Ernie Hudson, was now portrayed by Keith David. Both good actors, both right for the role, but neither one looking like the other. The shape of the face (and the nose is always a major factor), the body build, the amount of hair and its style, even pigmentation, keeps us from turning a blind eye to the casting change within the reality of the show.

'Psych' is pretty grounded in the so-called reality of Toobworld; they may investigate cases of ghosts and mummies and co-ed slasher spirits, but those are always debunked when the crime is solved. So I don't think a splainin in which Mr. Guster's facial structure was magically altered by a witch or a genie is going to fly in this case.

However, the show does take place in Santa Barbara, and this is a noted soap opera locale - one in which an entire series bore its name. And soap opera locations are known to be test sites for quantum leapers from the future beyond that of Dr. Sam Beckett. Many characters have been replaced over the years in such locales as Pine Valley, Port Charles, Llanview, Genoa City, Oakland, Salem, Bay City, and in this case, Santa Barbara.

As the viewers in the Trueniverse, what we were seeing was Keith David as the leaper who replaced the original Mr. Guster. Had he looked into a mirror at any point during the episode, we would have seen the visage of Ernie Hudson in the reflection. This splainin will serve until the next time Mr. Guster appears on the show.

It could be that Ernie Hudson will be free to come back to play the role again; in that case, then the original Mr. Guster will have returned from the "waiting room" outside the quantum leap accelerator. Or perhaps the producers preferred Keith David in the role, so it would be O'Bvious that the experiment was still in progress. Or who knows? Maybe even a third actor will take over the role the next time. In that case, then a new Leaper had taken over the experiment to explore life in early 21st Century Santa Barbara.

And dat's de name of dat tune!

December Gift #3

I LOVE Christmas.
No.
I adore Christmas, yes, adore.
I lovethe gifts, the decorations, the shopping, the parties, the gatherings, the food, the drinks, the sense of togetherness and love, just-everything!

But mostly I love the paper products.....everywhere I go I'm touching stuff to feel the weight of paper and I collect greeting cards and gift bags and paper.
It
It's a sickness.
All my friends have kids already, so why do I have about 30 baby shower cards???
They are pretty much past the Baptismal age, yet I have about 15 Baptism cards.
I can get away with my Birthday card collection but it's getting to the point where I don't want to give a way a card because it's too pretty.
Sick.

Which leads me to my point.

I need this container thingy from the Container Store.
I can store all my rolls of paper and bows and get this, I can SIT, and wrap paper.
Must have.

So really this is for the house, not for just me. :)

Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert

“The screen door opens and a pathway becomes clear
The smell and taste of yesterday… did I ever care?
The inevitable failure that fear haunts with success
The boy in the bubble…enabled or blessed?”

Decorating for Christmas!

We got our tree on Friday and got it set up and decorated today. Since it's in the ken (kitchen den), the decorations are minimal in keeping with the small space: white lights, Moravian stars, clip-on lanterns, and candy canes. I have my giant wreath hanging in the window. It's a grapevine wreath covered in vintage ornaments and cheap hobby store picks. Each year I add to it. I love looking at it; every inch of it holds a surprise.
This year we went with a live wreath on the front door, adorned with a simple bow.
A pair of small, girl's skates are draped over the back of a chair.
My all-time favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. Last year I got this 11x17" poster as a Christmas gift and framed it this year in a simple white frame which I decorated with a red and white glittery rope.
And dear boy Gideon got a Tiffany blue neck scarf for the Christmas season.

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This

TODAY'S TWD: OSCAR WILDE

November 30th, 1900:
Oscar Wilde, Irish writer, dies. (b. 1854)

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was an Irish playwright, poet, and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years hard labour after being convicted of "gross indecency" with other men. After Wilde was released from prison he set sail for Dieppe by the night ferry. He never returned to Ireland or Britain.
[from Wikipedia]

For Toobworld purposes, what may be most interesting in the life of Oscar Wilde may be his lecture tour of the American West. At least four different series/specials depicted different aspects of that trip to 'The Wild, Wild West'. And as a bit of "wish-craft", it might have been interesting to see him show up in an episode of 'The Wild, Wild West', maybe 'Maverick', or 'The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr.' (I think it's always pozz'ble, jes' pozz'ble, that Cousin Beau Maverick might have made Wilde's acquaintance while he lived in Europe.)

Here's a look at his trip to America:

On December 24th, 1881 Oscar Wilde embarked for America and a year-long lecture tour on such topics as "The House Beautiful" and "The Decorative Arts." He may or may not have told passengers that "the roaring ocean does not roar," or told a customs agent that "I have nothing to declare except my genius," but the captain did apparently express his regret at not having Wilde "lashed to the bowsprit on the windward side."

Thousands flocked to see and hear him, and many so took to heart his proclaimed mission "to make this artistic movement the basis for a new civilization" that craft societies and museum patronage blossomed in his wake. Letters home had Wilde crowing that he was a bigger hit than Dickens, the personal adulation necessitating three secretaries: "One writes my autographs all day for my admirers, the other receives the flowers that are left really every ten minutes. A third whose hair resembles mine is obliged to send off locks of his own hair to the myriad maidens of the city, and so is rapidly becoming bald."

Notwithstanding, Wilde was an easy, if not eager, target in America. A few mocked his poetry or his ideas; some, at their peril, mocked his utterances; most made fun of his appearance -- the "great ungainly crane" body, dressed in purple Hungarian smoking jacket with matching turban, knee breeches and black silk stockings, coat lined with lavender satin, everything laced and caped and topped with sky blue cravat. Seeing an opportunity, one Chicago clothing store used a picture of the "Ass-thete" to promote their manlier line. Such frontier manners had Wilde sometimes put out but rarely overmatched, and usually game for any adventure. After one talk in Leadville, a mining town in the Rocky Mountains -- "I spoke to them of the early Florentines, and they slept as though no crime had ever stained the ravines of their mountain home" -- Wilde agreeably descended to the bottom of a silver mine in a bucket ("I of course true to my principle being graceful even in a bucket"). There, to great cheering, he dined, drank whiskey and smoked a cigar, all but preamble to the main event:

Then I had to open a new vein, or lode, which with a silver drill I brilliantly performed, amidst unanimous applause. The silver drill was presented to me and the lode named "The Oscar." I had hoped that in their simple grand way they would have offered me shares in "The Oscar," but in their artless untutored fashion they did not. Only the silver drill remains as a memory of my night at Leadville.

While in the bar that night "with the miners and the female friends of the miners," Wilde noticed the sign "Please don't shoot the pianist; he is doing his best." Back in England, now touring his "Impressions of America," Wilde recalled all this with delight: "I was struck with this recognition of the fact that bad art merits the penalty of death, and I felt that in this remote city, where the aesthetic applications of the revolver were clearly established in the case of music, my apostolic task would be much simplified, as indeed it was."
[from "
Today In Literature"]
These are the actors who have appeared as Oscar Wilde on Television:

Paul Bartel
. . . "Comic Strip Presents..., The" (1982)
{Demonella (#7.5)}

Graham Chapman
. . . "Monty Python's Flying Circus" (1969)
{The British Showbiz Awards (#3.13)}
Both of the above performances would be found in Skitlandia.

Tim Curry
. . . "Wild West, The" (1993)
This was a documentary in which we only heard Wilde's voice (as provided by Tim Curry).

David Dukes
. . . "Lot, The" (1999)
{Oscar's Wilde (#2.11)}
As this was a series about a 1930s movie studio, I'm not exactly sure in what context Oscar Wilde appears.

Mark Eden
. . . "Sorrell and Son" (1984)
Like 'The Lot', this one is a puzzler as it takes place in 1934. I'm not sure what the context is for the appearance - a fancy dress ball?

Peter Egan
. . . "Lillie" (1978)
In 1978 London Weekend Television produced a television series about the life of Lillie Langtry entitled Lillie. In it Peter Egan played Oscar. The bulk of his scenes portrayed their close friendship up to and including their tours of America in 1882. Thereafter, he was in a few more scenes leading up to his trials in 1895.

Stephen Fry
. . . "Ned Blessing: The Story of My Life and Times" (1993) {Oscar (#1.4)} TV Series
. . . Wilde (1997)
Fry's appearance as Wilde in the "Cineverse" provides most of the pictures for this piece. And I like how he resembles Wilde. But I don't know whether I should hold Gambon or Egan to be the official portrait of Wilde for Toobworld. I guess it'll depend on if I ever find pics of either one in the role.....

Michael Gambon
. . . "Oscar" (1985)
Michael Gambon portrayed Wilde on British Television in 1983 in the three-part BBC series Oscar concentrating on the trial and prison term.

Richard Kneeland
. . . Feasting with Panthers (1974)
A dramatization of the play about Wilde's time spent in prison.

Simon MacCorkindale (pictured, right)
. . . "Mentors" (1998)
{Wilde Card (#1.6)}
Using their computer, a brother and sister bring forward historical characters who teach them important life lessons. Wilde taught them to be honest to themselves. The difference in his appearance from others who played Wilde on TV can be splained away by alternate realities - he was brought forward in Time from a different dimension.

Micheál MacLiammóir
. . . "On Trial" (1960)
{Oscar Wilde (#1.5)}
This was a dramatization of Wilde vs. Queensberry.

John O'Malley
. . . "Have Gun - Will Travel" (1957)
{The Ballad of Oscar Wilde (#2.12)}
When the noted British humorist plans an appearance in San Francisco, Paladin must extricate Oscar Wilde from the unpleasant predicament of being held for ransom.

Rowland Rivron
. . . "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" (1999)
{Millennium (#1.7)}
I'm thinking that in this context, someone might have dressed up as Oscar Wilde for a party......

Philip Sayer
. . . "BBC2 Play of the Week" (1977)
{Fearless Frank (#2.3)}
A look at the career of Frank Harris.

Richard Strange
. . . Blackheath Poisonings, The (1992)
A Victorian murder mystery from PBS.

James Urbaniak
. . . "Venture Bros., The" (2003)
{ORB (#3.11)}
This would mark Oscar Wilde's appearance in the Tooniverse.

DONE IN DONUTS

PRODUCT UNBECOMING & ECCE PROMO

Last season, 'Psych' did a little product placement throughout the run of episodes for a variety of products. For the most part (no matter where you stand on the topic), they worked well when it came to integration into the show; all save a very clunky exchange of dialogue about Dunkin Donuts.

But I guess Dunkin Donuts was happy with the collaboration as far as it went. But I get the feeling that they never would have agreed to participating in the newest 'Psych' promo. Broadcast after the Christmas special was almost over this past Friday, it showed a box of donuts liberally scattered about a murder scene. Nor would they like the gag-inducing gag when it turns out that it wasn't jelly on the jelly donut that Shawn was eating......

Not the kind of image you want to stick in the minds of your potential customers!

I wonder if this donut company was in any way affiliated with the Happy Time temp agency, as seen in 'Dead Like Me'?

Orange Wedding

I had my Orange and Yellow wedding today, except it was more
Orange and Garnet Red/Burgundy-ish.
It was a bit of stressful weekend, considering I was in the Hospital Wednesday and Thursday. I just knew one way that Friday would be a serious flower day. :)

Here is a sneak peek at my Lovely Bride!

She's so beautiful!

Booty Sweat

Every serious road cyclist out there knows that there's no better feeling on your bike than to have your saddle dialed in properly.

Oh, you can have a professional fitting where measurements are taken, angles and positions are set, and money leaves your wallet, but true satisfaction only comes after a nightmarish, OCD obsession, manifesting itself in hundreds of micro-adjustments over an infinite period of time. Until finally...it's perfect!

Mongo affectionately calls this..."A little slice of Heaven." No matter what else is going on with your riding that day, ass problems won't be a factor.

Mongo's been rocking a Specialized Alias saddle for a couple of years. Once it got dialed in, I never had a problem with it. It was the perfect combination of a light race saddle with just enough padding. Then I crashed a couple of times, broke the saddle, repaired the saddle with electrical tape and Macgyver know-how, and eventually lost my "little slice of Heaven."

I've known for a while that I need a new saddle, but I haven't really wanted to drop a hundy on on a new Alias...with times being tough and all. So what did I do?

Mongo, as always, found himself a deal. Being a Masters cyclist, my prostate and my package are always a priority when choosing a saddle. For that reason, I am a lifetime Specialized user. Unfortunately, I am not made of money, so economics always play a factor in my cycling purchases.

I got myself a Specialized Phenom saddle.(Pictured above) It is based on the Toupe, but is marketed as a racing MTB saddle. It is lighter that the Alias, but with cro-mo rails versus the ti rails found on the Alias. The only way to make up for the weight is to remove practically all the padding. This sucker is hard as a rock. My butt hasn't been this uncomfortable since someone slipped me a mickey at Backstreets in '97.

Oh well. As a famous French philosopher once said..."If you ain't sufferin', you ain't cyclin'."

TODAY'S TWD: NICK CARRAWAY

In the season finale for 'Entourage' this week, Martin Scorsese (playing himself) offered the role of Nick Carraway in his upcoming version of 'The Great Gatsby' to Vincent Chase.

Here's a great analysis of the character Nick Carraway:

Nick Carraway

The novel's narrator, Nick is a young man from Minnesota who, after being educated at Yale and fighting in World War I, goes to New York City to learn the bond business. Honest, tolerant, and inclined to reserve judgment, Nick often serves as a confidant for those with troubling secrets. After moving to West Egg, a fictional area of Long Island that is home to the newly rich, Nick quickly befriends his next-door neighbor, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. As Daisy Buchanan's cousin, he facilitates the rekindling of the romance between her and Gatsby. "The Great Gatsby" is told entirely through Nick's eyes; his thoughts and perceptions shape and color the story.

If Gatsby represents one part of Fitzgerald's personality, the flashy celebrity who pursued and glorified wealth in order to impress the woman he loved, then Nick represents another part: the quiet, reflective Midwesterner adrift in the lurid East. A young man (he turns thirty during the course of the novel) from Minnesota, Nick travels to New York in 1922 to learn the bond business. He lives in the West Egg district of Long Island, next door to Gatsby. Nick is also Daisy's cousin, which enables him to observe and assist the resurgent love affair between Daisy and Gatsby. As a result of his relationship to these two characters, Nick is the perfect choice to narrate the novel, which functions as a personal memoir of his experiences with Gatsby in the summer of 1922.

Nick is also well suited to narrating "The Great Gatsby" because of his temperament. As he tells the reader in Chapter I, he is tolerant, open-minded, quiet, and a good listener, and, as a result, others tend to talk to him and tell him their secrets. Gatsby, in particular, comes to trust him and treat him as a confidant. Nick generally assumes a secondary role throughout the novel, preferring to describe and comment on events rather than dominate the action. Often, however, he functions as Fitzgerald's voice, as in his extended meditation on time and the American dream at the end of Chapter IX.

Insofar as Nick plays a role inside the narrative, he evidences a strongly mixed reaction to life on the East Coast, one that creates a powerful internal conflict that he does not resolve until the end of the book. On the one hand, Nick is attracted to the fast-paced, fun-driven lifestyle of New York. On the other hand, he finds that lifestyle grotesque and damaging. This inner conflict is symbolized throughout the book by Nick's romantic affair with Jordan Baker. He is attracted to her vivacity and her sophistication just as he is repelled by her dishonesty and her lack of consideration for other people.

Nick states that there is a “quality of distortion” to life in New York, and this lifestyle makes him lose his equilibrium, especially early in the novel, as when he gets drunk at Gatsby's party in Chapter II. After witnessing the unraveling of Gatsby's dream and presiding over the appalling spectacle of Gatsby's funeral, Nick realizes that the fast life of revelry on the East Coast is a cover for the terrifying moral emptiness that the valley of ashes symbolizes. Having gained the maturity that this insight demonstrates, he returns to Minnesota in search of a quieter life structured by more traditional moral values.
[From
SparkNotes]

Nick would be a good character for Vince, who's not a good actor. Like Alan Swan declares in "My Favorite Year", "I'm not an actor; I'm a STAR!", and that applies to Vince as well. So as Gatsby's friend, serving as the observer to the actions of the those people swirling about him, Vince wouldn't need to call on anything more than the expression in his eyes, and he does have very expressive eyes.

As for any other casting on the picture, if we had to at least guess on who would play Gatsby, I would think Scorsese's televersion wouldn't stray too far from the real Marty. And that would mean he more than likely might cast somebody with whom he had worked in the past - I'm thinking Leonardo DiCaprio. And maybe Matt Damon either as Tom Buchanan or the mechanic George Wilson, whose wife is having an affair with Tom. (Maybe Mark Wahlberg for that role?) And Daisy? Scarlett Johanssen, perhaps?

Scorsese told Vincent that he planned to do a modern version of the story, setting it on the Upper West Side rather than in West Egg. I'm not sure that would work; in fact, I think the real Martin Scorsese would rather take on the challenge of filming it in its 1920s period on Long Island. But Toobworld does have its differences with the "Trueniverse" and this would be one of them.

Who knows? Maybe one of the actors he hires turns out to be an alien posing as a human!

From there, you can also read about the other characters, the mores of the times, and even a synopsis for each chapter of the novel.

Western Shoshone protest Barrick Gold on Mount Tenabo photos

Western Shoshone protest Barrick Gold's destruction on sacred Mount Tenabo on Wednesday. Shoshone call for help to establish an encampment.
Article by Brenda Norrell
Photos by Lisa Wolf
CRESCENT VALLEY, Newe Sogobi (Nevada) -- While most Americans enjoyed Thanksgiving this week, Western Shoshone protested the devastation on their sacred Mount Tenabo, as Barrick Gold ripped out pine trees by the roots on this ceremonial mountain for gold mining.
As Barrick Gold continues its practice of genocide, targeting Indigenous Peoples territories around the world, Barrick is destroying Mount Tenabo for one of the United States largest open pit gold mines. The Cortez Hills Expansion Project is at the flank of the mountain where Shoshone carry out sweatlodges and other ceremonies. (See protest photos at http://www.bsnorrell.blogspot.com/ )
Shoshone called for help and an immediate encampment to protect sacred Mount Tenabo.
Earlier this week, several Western Shoshone tribes and non-profit indigenous and environmental organizations filed a restraining order in the federal District Court in Reno against the construction of the proposed mine site.Unable to wait for the hearing that is scheduled for early next week and the mine’s continual slaughter of the pinion forest, the Western Shoshone grandmothers and supporters traveled to the site demanding Barrick to stop cutting the trees.
"As heavy machinery used to tear out the pinion trees came to halt upon the arrival of the Shoshones, Barrick Gold employees ignored the Shoshone’s demand that they cease the clear cutting. They witnessed piles of pinion and other trees strewn across the landscape and unfenced polluted ponds," Western Shoshone said in a joint statement.
“Today we went to a war zone, a war zone against the trees by the Barrick Gold Company. If people can eat or drink gold to sustain life, maybe we can call it a sacrifice of the life of trees, trees that gives us pine nuts and other medicinal uses,” stated Carrie Dann, Western Shoshone grandmother and executive director of the Western Shoshone Defense Project. The Western Shoshone had lived in the area of Mount Tenabo since the beginning of time.
Today it is the homelands to local Shoshones and continues to be the home to Shoshone creation stories, spirit life, medicinal foods and plants as well as a site for spiritual and ceremonial practices. Mount Tenabo is in the heart of Western Shoshone territory and is part of the ancestral lands that has been identified and recognized as Western Shoshone territory through the ratification of the Treaty of Ruby Valley between the Western Shoshone and the United States.
“The mining company and the Bureau of Land Management are trespassing on the Western Shoshone treaty land and are destroying our mountains, trees, food, medicine and leaving dirty polluted water ponds that are wide open making it unsafe to the birds and animals. Why doesn’t the mining company go dig up the Vatican or the Mormon Tabernacle instead of Western Shoshone lands, I’m sure they will find gold there, because this is what you are doing to our mountains and trees," said Mary McCloud, Western Shoshone grandmother.
Earlier this year, Barrick attorneys halted release of a book exposing the global genocide and atrocities of Barrick Gold. The book launch for Noir Canada: Pillage, corruption et criminalité en Afrique, edited by Alain Denault and the Collectif Ressources d'Afrique out of Montréal, was halted when the authors and publishers (Édition Écosociété) received letters from a law firm representing Barrick Gold, according to the Dominion in Canada.
Barrick has also sued The Guardian and The Observer over published articles about the Bulyanhulu massacre in Tanzania.
The book exposes Barrick's advantageous mining contracts, partnerships with arms dealers and mercenaries in the Great Lakes region, miners buried alive in Tanzania, an "involuntary genocide" by poisoning in Mali, brutal expropriations in Ghana, using people from the Ivory Coast for pharmaceutical testing, devastating hydroelectric projects in Senegal and the savage privatization of the railway system in West Africa.

TODAY'S TWD: SORAS

November 28, 1975:
As the World Turns and The Edge of Night, the final two American soap operas that had resisted going to pre-taped broadcasts, air their last live episodes.

I'm still on the road for the holiday weekend, so I'm just going to do a quick TV-related Tiddlywinkydink for those of you who tune in. Because of that soap opera-related news item, I thought I'd spin off to a topic that probably affected both of those soaps, but one that I've especially noticed on 'The Young & The Restless', the soap my Mom used to watch: SORAS, AKA "rapid aging".

From Wikipedia:

Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome (also SORAS or "rapid aging") is the term used to describe the aging of a television character (usually an infant or child, but also sometimes a teenager) that is faster than they should be aging, given the timeline of the show. The process is usually done to allow for more rapid character development, and to allow the writers to develop new storylines for the character.

Although the process originated in and is most common in soap operas, it has also been used in prime time comedy and drama series. In soap operas, it is nearly always done by recasting the role after the character has been absent for a time, with a new actor appearing at the character's newly "SORAS'ed" age. In the case of prime time series, the SORAS procedure usually occurs in between seasons, with a new, older actor appearing when the show returns.

The term was coined by Soap Opera Weekly founding editor in chief Mimi Torchin in the early 1990s. It's generally used to refer to cases where a character's rapid aging happens off-screen without any explanation, rather than to storylines in science fiction and fantasy series where a character is shown as being rapidly aged due to technology, magic or non-human biology.

The phenomenon has led to a newer term, de-SORAS, which refers to the opposite effect – when characters remain the same age for an unusually long period of time, or even get younger.

(In the Toobworld novel I'm forever working on, two of my characters were shipped off to a Swiss boarding school and came back several years older.)

There's plenty more to be found on the subject at the Wikipedia page for Soras.

Black Friday protest of Emeryville Shellmound desecration

By Brenda Norrell
Censored News

SAN FRANCISCO -- Morning Star Gali said Shellmound Walkers will protest the Emeryville shopping center built on Ohlone graves on Friday, Nov. 28. Friday is known as "Black Friday," the largest shopping day of the year.

"People are shopping on the graves of our ancestors," Gali said, as Native Americans departed from the Alcatraz Sunrise Ceremony on Thursday.

Shellmound Walkers will leave the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland Friday morning and walk to Emeryville, across from San Francisco. The protest will be at Shellmound Drive and Ohlone Way in Emeryville. The mock Shellmound there is "very disrepectful," she said

Gali said the walkers message to shoppers on Black Friday is, "Don't shop on our graves. Don't continue to desecrate these burial sites."

Mohawk Nation News: Is this Palestine or soon-to-be-Ongwehonwe communities

DID YOU VISIT YOUR RELATIVES TODAY? IS THIS PALESTINE OR SOON-TO-BE-ONGWEHONWE COMMUNITIES?

MOHAWK NATION NEWS

No v. 25, 2008. It’s called “warehousing of surplus humanity." All humans are equal. No one can decide that we are surplus. The object is to remove the target people from existence. This is real, folks!

First, the territory of the targets is occupied. Their communities, work, education, finances and colonial apparatus are controlled by the outside forces. The agenda is carried out by the bureaucrats and military. They are trained in oppression using non-lethal weaponry to stay within the bounds of the UN human rights conventions.

A fascist state needs an uneducated non-resisting people. To achieve this, lots of interference in every day life, schooling and economy are priorities. The youth are specially interfered with. Places of work, schools or commerce are not set up within the communities forcing them to work or attend school or shop outside.

The target group is usually isolated from anybody who could help them. They are demonized. There is a media blackout so that the perpetrators can “warehouse” other victims later on who will be unprepared and unable to defend themselves.

Eventually walls are put up around the targets with checkpoints everywhere. Food and essentials are stopped from going in and out. Electricity is turned off. Water is undrinkable. The bus breaks down. Detours are set up everywhere forcing them to spend hours to carry on their normal lives. “Flying [mobile] check points” are set up everywhere on a permanent or temporary basis. They can arrive and stay for minutes or hours at any place anytime. Anybody can be arrested for going to meetings to discuss their plight.

The situation gets worse. Blockages of the community become more often and more severe. Sometimes nothing goes in or out. Electricity is cut off more often so that raw sewage flows in the streets. Houses can’t be heated. Refrigerated food goes bad.

To instill fear schools, institutions, hospitals and even homes are threatened or burnt down or trashed. Teachers, workers and service providers stop giving services “to protest the blockades” or “dangers” they are forced to work in. Papers, books and communications are kept out or controlled. No one gets trained to be a doctor or professional which are necessities in such communities. 90% have no job. It comes to a point where some families can only send one child to school or out to work. Each family is allowed one member to have a job.

Because of the system of checkpoints and walls, workers and students have to leave home and live near schools or their place of work to avoid 4 hours a day of travel which normally takes 20 minutes.

The targets are constantly reminded they are being watched. The police or special army units walk into their homes, at 2:00 am, without knocking, ask for ID and then take them to the police station. They study the personality of the targets and look for collaborators or spies to work with them. They take unflattering pictures after the interrogation or torture so the targets look like criminals.

Nighttime is the worst time. The targets are kept awake. They could be taken away at any moment. Soldiers come inside, point guns and start beating anyone in their sight. They yell, “Give me your ID." People are forced outside without shoes or proper clothing. Hundreds of their community members are on their knees in the streets, sometimes until 3 am. Names are called out by the police on speakers. Some are taken away and interrogated for 5 hours and asked if they saw anyone throw stones or speak badly of them. This excuse is usually bogus.

There are 7 to 8 hour waits at the checkpoints. Students or workers can only go home once every 6 to 7 months to visit their family. They have to sneak there and sometimes have to hide out all night. They can’t use the main roads and are forced to go into the woods or mountains. All of these atrocities are video taped by the oppressors with cameras everywhere. These are for study, training, propaganda and their own perverted pleasure.

The students or workers have to leave 2 hours before class or work to go 5 minutes away. Everybody is fingerprinted at the checkpoints. All their bags are checked. Their iris is scanned and their biometric identification with all manner of information and misinformation is scanned.

Curfews are set up throughout the communities and towns. Mobile military checkpoints are put on tanks and jeeps with snipers watching over them. Communities, schools or institutions are closed down at will. The strategy is to make sure students cannot study or people cannot work, meet or move around. If they object, the children, women and men can be “detained” or beaten or even shot.

The main gates have high security electronic doors. There are “blind” checkpoints where military jeeps suddenly appear and demand IDs. People are forced to wait for minutes or hours. No one can complain during this examination. The police or military can invade the community or shoot and throw tear gas at anytime if they perceive a security threat. Anyone can be jailed. Young men are in put in prisons. Beautiful young girls are forced to take off all their clothes and crawl on their hands and knees through the checkpoints. They are made to eat food that is forbidden by their culture or they are allergic to.

Palestinians say this is how they are being treated by the Israelis. Canadian police and military are being sent to Israel for training on “crowd control." Many of these fascist tactics were used on us during the 1990 Mohawk Oka Crisis. 5,000 Canadian soldiers surrounded three of our communities [Kanehsatake, Kahnawake and Akwesasne] behind razor wire and fully armed troops. It was because we opposed the desecration of our burial and ceremonial sites. We were surrounded by walls of police, soldiers, armaments and checkpoints for 78 days. We had to wait for hours to get through them while suffering specially designed humiliation from the soldiers and police.

Canadian soldiers went into Mohawk homes purportedly looking of weapons. They smashed everything and even s--t on the floors. Many of us were arrested for no reason or for “political activities”, which is called “administrative detention."

Canada is no goody-goody! Canada collected much secret “information” about us. They refuse to disclose it because their misconceptions and misinterpretations could be challenged. Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants to change the laws so that the youth as young as 14 years old can be sent to adult prisons! This looks like it’s aimed at our Ongwehonwe youth.

How can such cruel conditions be created by members of a well- educated nation whose ancestors were subject to unspeakable abuse? Canada is bringing back these practices that originally came from here. The South Africans learned “apartheid” from Canada. Laws and policies were passed here to mistreat and demoralize us and cut down our population. The colonial strategy included genocide, the pass system and mental and moral abuse. Hitler praised Canada and the U.S. for their thoroughness in getting rid of the “Indian problem”. He copied the reservation and residential school systems for his concentration camps. Like Canada he tried to instill hopeless, to break down our spirit and to kill us off. It will never work. We will always be here on our land.

Western Shoshone Devastation and Destruction on Mount Tenabo

Western Shoshone Grandmothers Day of Resistance –
Devastation and Destruction Witnessed
By Western Shoshone Defense Project

(November 27, 2008, Crescent Valley, Newe Sogobi (Nevada). Western Shoshone grandmothers and other Western Shoshone supporters gathered in solidarity yesterday to oppose the clear cutting of pinion trees at the spiritual Mount Tebano where Barrick Gold Company is planning one of the country’s largest open pit gold mines known as the Cortez Hills Expansion Project at the flank of the Mountain. Earlier this week, several Western Shoshone tribes and non-profit indigenous and environmental organizations have filed a restraining order in the federal District Court in Reno, NV, against the construction of the proposed mine site.

Unable to wait for the hearing that is scheduled for early next week and the mine’s continual slaughter of the pinion forest, the Western Shoshone grandmothers and supporters traveled to the site demanding Barrick to stop cutting the trees. As heavy machinery used to tear out the pinion trees came to halt upon the arrival of the Shoshones, Barrick Gold employees ignored the Shoshone’s demand that they cease the clear cutting. They witnessed piles of pinion and other trees strewn across the landscape and unfenced polluted ponds.

Why doesn’t the mining company go dig up the Vatican or the Mormon Tabernacle instead of Western Shoshone lands, I’m sure they will find gold there, because this is what you are doing to our mountains and trees, stated Mary McCloud, another Western Shoshone grandmother.

LOST IN THE FRINGE

I got this message from Martin Ross, who runs that 'Columbo' fansite you'll find linked to the left:

You probably spotted it or a similar cross-Abrams hook, but Agent Dunham had a couple of Oceanic Airlines tickets in her paw on Fringe Tuesday.

I haven't seen it yet m'self. I DVR'd it Tuesday night as I made ready for work. But then I took the train to Connecticut right after work for the holiday. So I'll check it out tomorrow.

But I guess that puts 'Fringe' "officially" into those other versions of the TV Universe!

TODAY'S TIDDLYWINKYDINK: HALLELUJAH

I don't keep track of what songs are used in Toobworld soundtracks, or how often; I wonder if anybody does. But when my brother mentioned Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" in recent emails and on his Facebook page, I wondered if there could be a song used more often than that on TV. (The only song that comes to mind - and I don't even know the title - is a hard-driving disco kind of number, where a deep-voiced guy goes "Ohhhh, Yeahhhhh". You know the song....)

Anyhoo, here are the series in which "Hallelujah" - as sung by Buckley - appeared in at least one episode. And you'll see why today was the perfect day to comment on this.....

"Ugly Betty"
- A Nice Day for a Posh Wedding

"ER"
- The Honeymoon Is Over

"Criminal Minds"
- A Real Rain

"House M.D."

"The O.C."

"Without a Trace"

So what do you think of my un-Thanksgiving Cornucopia (sp?)

I really wasn't trying to do fall so I thought I would add some Pink rununculas, Passion Flower, Privet Berries, Eucalyptus, Lavender,Kale, Thyme, and Geranium.
I kind of like it and think it could work as a centerpiece for an event or maybe even a wedding.

But look!
I wasn't the only one, hehe.
jenny said she couldn't help but Goth it out a bit by spray painting hers purple and adding lace.
I think it's cute. :)

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!!

Shredtastic

As the only action sports outlet on television, Fuel TV has to be all things to all people. Because of this, the message gets diluted and the product suffers.

That being said, there are a few gems to be found in this pile of rubble.

My second favorite show on Fuel, behind Drive, (W/ Mike Vah-la-lee. Not Va-lay-lee...for all you young punks out there) is Built To Shred.

Jeff King and his crew prove every week that any obstacle can be made skateable, and most importantly, fun.
