AS SEEN ON TV NEWS: "CAMELOT" CASTING

The History Channel has announced the major cast members for its controversial mini-series on the Kennedy family:

John F. Kennedy - Greg Kinnear

Jacqueline Kennedy - Katie Holmes

Bobby Kennedy - Barry Pepper

Joseph Kennedy, Sr. - Tom Wilkinson

The mini-series is being drubbed because it's being produced by Joel Surnow, the ultra-conservative creator of '24'. However, Stephen Kronish, who claims to be a Democratic liberal, is writing the script.

We'll see what we shall view.....

HUNTIN' PECK

This is one of those posts I call my "days off stories", because it takes so long to work it all out....

'Fringe' has really been delivering the goods this season and a recent episode - "White Tulip" - was a fascinating look at time travel; made even better with the guest performance by Peter Weller as Alistair Peck, an astrophysicist specializing in bio-temporal travel. Basically, he was a home-grown quantum leaper.

But as good as the episode was, there was still a problem with its use of time travel.

Here's what happened: back in 2009, Peck's fiancee died in a horrible car accident. And since then Professor Peck worked on realizing his time travel theories so that he could go back to the accident. (We were led to believe that he wanted to change history by saving her life.) But every time he tried, Peck could only go back to a moment on board a "Mass Transit" train. (Not sure on the actual name of the train system, but I think it was a commuter service like a lower level Amtrak, more like NJ Transit.)

This ended up killing everybody in that train car - his "quantum leap" needed to drain all of the energy in the immediate area upon Peck's arrival and that included the bio-electrical energy in human bodies. With an assist by Walter Bishop, Peck was finally able to get back to before the accident - in time to join his fiancee in the car before the crash and so he died with her.

But here's the thing - what happened to the Alistair Peck of 2009?

On that date, at the time of the crash, Peck was standing in a field looking at a hot-air balloon. He chose to go back to that field so that the energy drain would only kill the surrounding vegetation - the grass and the trees. (No idea where the guy was who was supposed to be tending that hot-air balloon.)

But if he was already there, he would have been killed as well. And that would have negated his whole future, which would have rewritten history or created a parallel timeline. By rights, Peck should have faded from existence as soon as he reached the past if this happened.

Now, let's suppose the 2009 Peck didn't reach that field before the 2010 Peck arrived from the future. He was a genius so it wouldn't be long before he realized that he'd have to change his identity while he continued his research. But the plan of action would alter history as well since he no longer would be following his original timeline. In the 'Doctor Who' episode "The Idiot's Lantern", the Doctor and Rose Tyler were enjoying the neighborhood block party celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation on June 2, 1953 at the end of their current adventure....

Out on the street, 50's music is playing, people are out on the street dancing and talking. Trestle tables line the centre of the road covered in pastries, cakes, drinks, etc. The Doctor and Rose walk down the street.

ROSE
We could go down the mall, join in with the crowd.
THE DOCTOR
Nah, that's just pomp and circumstance.
This is history right here.
ROSE
The domestic approach.
THE DOCTOR
Exactly.

[courtesy of the Doctor Who (2005+) Transcripts site]
History isn't just the big events; it's the result of the small interactions we have with other ordinary people. Change just one of those encounters, and history could be affected. It brings to mind that classic example of Chaos Theory - kill a butterfly in the primordial past and you could alter the future timeline.

So if 2009 Peck had to abandon his previous life, that means he could no longer have any interaction with the people he should have met in his previously played-out future - family members, business associates, friends, neighbors, grocery clerks, his doctor and dentist, etc. And those lost encounters would remove the ripple effects which could have led to other "historical" events. Small they may have been, but ultimately they could have led to something of greater impact.

We could use such an alteration to the timeline to splain away any discrepancy in a TV show episode that took place between May 18, 2009, and whenever "White Tulip" took place. (That's a project I have not yet looked into. I was hoping it could be used to wipe out the appearances of Governor Shalvoy from 'Law & Order', but Tom Everett Scott began playing that role in 2008.) So if you think of anything that causes a discrepancy in a TV show after May 19, 2009 (in the Toobworld timeline), let me know. Maybe we can bring that show back into the fold using this rewrite of history.

Reflections on the journey to Bolivia

Reflections on the journey to Bolivia

Photos: President Evo Morales, playing soccer in Colomi; Photo 2: President Morales at the traditional feast after the game in his community 0f Colomi, Bolivia. Photos by Brenda Norrell.

Now, that the World Climate Conference and journey to Bolivia is almost behind me, it is a good time to reflect on this incredible experience. I really was not prepared to nearly die in La Paz, with its altitude of 13,000 feet, or wind up in an ambulance on oxygen in Cochabamba, then on oxygen again at the airport.

Then, again, I could not have imagined that even though I could not walk or stand for more than 10 minutes at a time, that I would still be able to travel up the mountains in a press bus, and watch President Evo Morales play soccer. It was a great joy to be with the Bolivian people in Colomi and share their bounty of fresh foods, delicious fish, beans, corn and other traditional foods. The spirit in the room, with the cheering and kindness, reminded me of a Navajo basketball game. Here the homemade food was ice cream and there were firecrackers. It felt good to walk away with a Bolivian flag on a slender bamboo pole.

It was sad to see the lack of press coverage in the United States of such a powerful world event, and sadder still to see the spin articles attempting to discredit President Evo Morales. I didn't meet any US media while I was in Bolivia, but the press was well represented from Europe and South America.

The US media has been plummeting like a long-beaked bird who died in flight, straight for the earth. It seems to have smashed into the ground at this point. Sadly, now newspapers rely on the armchair journalists, who sit at home and write from written statements, or plagiarize the work of others. Because they are not present, they rely on sarcasm, rather than facts, and spend a great deal of time attempting to make themselves look clever. A look at most of the US news articles on the conference reveals that the bird smashed to the ground and the last publications still paying reporters are now cannibalizing, eating their own.

Indigenous Peoples from throughout the world made incredible sacrifices to be in Cochabamba, Bolivia, to take part in this effort to rescue the planet from the satanic force of the corporate rape of Mother Earth. They came to ensure that the forests, mountains, oceans, lakes, streams, jungles and the very air we breathe, will still be there for future generations.

For those who traveled across continents, with little or no money, it was extremely difficult to reach Bolivia. But in the end, there were not 5,000 people, or even the 10,000 people as expected, there were 35,000 people, ready to work hard for a better world and preservation of this planet. Navajos said the message of living in harmony with Mother Earth, reflects the Dine' way of Walking Beauty.

The final declaration of the World Peoples Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth offers a great deal to reflect on, as does the final statement from the working group of Indigenous Peoples.

Today, as I near the end of this great journey, I am reflecting on this paragraph from the final declaration of the people:

"Knowledge is universal, and should for no reason be the object of private property or private use, nor should its application in the form of technology. Developed countries have a responsibility to share their technology with developing countries, to build research centers in developing countries for the creation of technologies and innovations, and defend and promote their development and application for 'living well.' The world must recover and re-learn ancestral principles and approaches from native peoples to stop the destruction of the planet, as well as promote ancestral practices, knowledge and spirituality to recuperate the capacity for 'living well' in harmony with Mother Earth."

Here is how senators voted on the final version of Arizona Senate Bill 1070, Arizona's new racial cleansing law, which allows for racial profiling. It was created by Sen. Russell Pearce, Republican senator from Mesa, Arizona.
Why did it pass? Check out the votes. Navajo Senator Albert Hale did not vote. White supremacists rely on non-voting legislators and 'no shows' to get bills like this passed.
Northern Arizona is home to Navajo, Hopi, Havasupai, Hualapai, Paiute, Apache, Yavapai and other Native Americans. From northern Arizona, Senators Sylvia Allen, Jack Harper, Steve Pierce and Ron Gould voted 'Yes' to the racial cleansing law.
The law is also being called the 'Joe Arpaio self protection act,' put in place to protect the racist Maricopa County Sheriff from lawsuits because of racial profiling.

The new law will mean more profits for private prison contractors. Arizona State Legislators are in collusion with the private prison profiteers GEO (formerly Wackenhut) and CCA. These corporations are already profiteering from imprisoning people of color in Arizona private prisons. For white supremacist legislators, imprisoning people of color means jobs for Arizona. CCA (Corrections Corporation of America) is Pinal County's largest non-governmental employer.

MAY DAY: PROTEST IN TUCSON

TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA:
La Gran Marcha Por Los Derechos Humanos

The Tucson May 1st Coalition and la Coalicion de Derechos Humanos invite the communities of Arizona and of this country to join forces on this historic day as we bear witness to the most serious attacks to our civil and human rights - to our own humanity. We make a call for resistance in our collective fight for liberty and justice for all.

On May Day 2010, in Tucson, Arizona, our community that has consistently fought against the federal government's use of Arizona as the laboratory for initiatives, policies, and laws, that are anti-immigrant, anti-human, will embrace the mantra that has come from hundreds of calls from across the country, TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA.

This dramatic show of unity and support opens the opportunity to understand that SB1070 was not born overnight, but rather the direct and intended result of mid-90's border enforcement strategies, known as Operation Gatekeeper, Operation Hold the Line, Operation Rio Grande, and here in Arizona, Operation Safeguard. Building an unprecedented military-type enforcement infrastructure, these strategies have intentionally funneled most migrants through Arizona's southern border. By diverting more than half of all migrants that had traditionally crossed through California and Texas into a very conservative state where the federal and local governments own most of the border land (thereby avoiding the community fight-back that occurred along the border in Texas), the stage was set for the eventual passing of SB1070.

This "surge" in crossings caused division and chaos in the border towns, allowed for the influx of hate and other anti-immigrant groups, opened the political space to racist and intolerant voices, with mainstream media feeding the climate of fear, eventually resulting in the election of openly anti-immigrant politicians like Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio, County Attorney Andrew Thomas, and State legislator Russell Pearce. The Minutemen and other anti-immigrant groups proceeded to poison attitudes across the country, resulting in the spread of fear, racism, hate, ignorance and anti-human policies that other states have or are in process of replicating.

SB1070 is the most racist law in recent history, allowing for the legalization and institutionalization of racism, their version of "ethnic cleansing." We know that migration is not a law enforcement or national security issue, that we have encouraged migrants to come to our country to build it, that we have helped to destroy jobs in Mexico and elsewhere only to blame the very victims/survivors who migrate to work and provide for their families, that we have created and enriched smuggling organizations who we then use as the reason for the unprecedented buildup of policing and military-type enforcement along the border and in the interior of our country. With this law, the stage is set again for even more dramatic calls for more "security." Our laws and policies have brought only INSECURITY - deaths, division, intolerance and ignorance, environmental destruction, and abuse of Indigenous communities.

We call on for an end to SB 1070, an end to the enforcement strategies on the border and in our communities, and an end to criminalization of the immigrant. We call for a real dialogue based on truth, addressing the root causes of migration, and promoting justice for all. We call for a commitment of noncompliance of SB 1070, and ask for the commitment from all allies and people of conscience to boycott Arizona in all fashions. ¡Todos Somos Arizona!

The Masters

The Masters is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the United States. It first started in 1934, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual golf tournament. For the first five years it was called "The Augusta National Invitation Tournament", because "The Masters" was thought to be too presumptuous. The traditional green jacket that is given to the winner started in 1949, when it first started the green jackets were worn by all the golfers so that the fans could easily spot them while they were playing. The jacket then became a symbol of the winner becoming a member of the prestigious club.

This year was the 74th Masters tournament, the winner was Phil Mickelson with a score of sixteen under. Lee Westwood came in second at thirteen under followed by Anthony Kim at twelve under. Tiger Woods made an appearance but came in at fourth tied with K.J. Choi at eleven under.

Lucky Charms

One of the greatest cereals from General Mills is Lucky Charms. They are mostly memorable from Lucky and the kids that chase after him for his Lucky Charms. The Lucky Charms first appeared in stores in 1964. The Lucky Charms was first invented on 1962 by John Holahan. The cereal consists of marshmallow bits (marbits) and toasted oat-based pieces. The marshmallows started with pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers. They changed over the years by starting to add blue diamonds, purple horseshoes, red balloons, rainbows, pots of gold, leprechaun hats, shooting stars, and hourglasses. Then the hidden key started in 2005, where it starts looking like a yellow door, but when you add milk, the key magically appears. Lucky Charms is now one of the most famous cereals today.

THEORY OF RELATEEVEETY: PINKY AND DAISY

In order to pay tribute to Dorothy Provine, who passed away this week at the age of 73 (according to the IMDb; I've seen her age listed as 75 as well.), I went to the Paley Center for Media today and watched two episodes of 'The Roaring 20's'. (I would have watched the only other one that they had in the library, but it was on tape and not digital; I would have had to access that from a different terminal.) There were no episodes from her other TV show, 'The Alaskans', which I would have liked to see, nor anything from her guest work on such shows as 'Hawaiian Eye' and '77 Sunset Strip'. (In two episodes separated by several years - "Downbeat" and "Upbeat" - Miss Provine's character of Nora Shirley participated in a crossover between '77 Sunset Strip' and 'Bourbon Street Beat'.)

Dorothy Provine played Delaware "Pinky" Pinkham on 'The Roaring 20's', a flapper entertainer at the Charleston Club in Manhattan, but who also performed in burlesque houses like B.F. Keith's Palace. And it was during her rendtion of "Ain't We Got Fun?", dressed like a hobo, that I had an idea for a "Theory of Relateeveety".

Prohibition ran from 1920 to 1933, but since the show is called 'The Roaring 20's', we'll limit the range of the series to the decade from 1920 to 1930. Allowing that Prohibition was underway for about a year (Everybody seems to have become comfortable with the situation), I'm thinking that Pinky was the same age as Miss Provine when she filmed the series. So Pinky Pinkham was 23 in 1921, and that means she was born in 1898.

It'll be my contention that when she was 15 or 16 years old and before she was professionally known as "Pinky", Delaware Pinkham had a child out of wedlock and either gave it up for adoption, or gave it to a family member to raise.

A child that young having a child of her own is not unheard of. (Consider Nancy from the 'Doctor Who' episodes "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances".) By the age of 15, Pinky could have already embraced the easy morals that would come to be associated with the following decade.

Whether Pinky had any relationship with the child once she gave it up is as unknown as the actual truth to this theory. But either way, the child - a daughter who was given the name of Daisy and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, - grew up to have the same natural talent as her birth mother. (And we got to meet her in the TV series 'Dead Like Me'.)

In her adopted family (or in her foster family if she was raised by a family member), there was another girl whom Daisy considered to be her own sister. (They may have been half-sisters.) During the course of the series, it was suggested that Daisy's sister had been killed by an abusive husband/boyfriend/lover.

Whether she was adopted by a family named "Adair", or it was a stage name she took upon starting her own career, Daisy Adair headed west when she came of age to seek out a career in the movie business.

Sadly, Daisy's life was short-lived. She died at the age of 25, a year after Prohibition ended. (The cause of death was asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation; she would tell people she died giving head to Clark Gable during the making of "Gone With The Wind".) After death, she became a reaper, collecting the souls of those who were about to die violently. Well into the Aughts of this millennium Daisy Adair was still reaping souls.

It is unknown if she ever learned the truth of her birth and that her mother was the entertainer known as Pinky Pinkham. As always, this is all pure conjecture.....

The Story You Are About To Here Is True

It all started last Thursday, a week ago today, when Mongo may have saved a seventy nine year old man's life. I came across him, face down in a ditch and not really moving, on the side of the Silver Comet Trail...and what followed was a defining moment in my humanity.

Though I do believe I am a kind, compassionate, giving person, I also know that I am partial to narcissistic and selfish tendencies. So when my brain registered at twenty four miles per hour that there was a person laying face down in a ditch, I literally had a split second to decide whether or not to get "involved". I really must have more asshole in me than I originally thought because it took two "I should really stop!" spoken to myself before I finally stopped and turned around.

The man's name was Jack...and he was an "old" 79. He had lost his balance and stumbled off the side of the trail only to collapse, face down, in a bed of pine straw and rocks. He couldn't turn himself over and his face was bleeding, and when I turned him over, his mouth was filled with dirt and straw. It was quite a sobering sight. I cleared his mouth, washed his face with my water bottle, and made him drink some water. He told me that he had resigned himself to dying if no one had come along...and he was completely serious.

The story ends well...with myself and another good samaritan named Terry spending over an hour with Jack, calling his wife to meet us, and slowly walking him an inch at a time the half a mile back to his medication. During that walk I learned about Jack's Diabetes, his war service, his thirty years working for Hewlett-Packard, and his prized Collie who had recently died. I truly felt honored to have been able to have done "something" for a total stranger who, through a potential tragedy, has inspired me to be a better person.

Mcdonalds Rap Gone Bad

In Utah, there were two friends who were looking forward to college and maybe even getting into college for free. Until four friends were arrested for disordely conduct by a Mcdonalds. The four guys got on the website, http://www.youtube.com/, and took pointers on the video "Mcdonalds rap". The four friends practiced the joke for a while then decided to go try it out at a local Mcdonalds. They went through the drive through and tried the rap. The employee didn't feel comfortable and told the manager to get on the mic to listen to what they are saying. The manager told the four friends to say there order normal. The group of guys decided not to and just kept going along with the joke. Sooner or later the guys left Mcdonalds and decided to go to there high school's volleyball game. When the four friends got out of the car they were arrested by the police for disordely conduct. The friends were sentenced to 90 days in jail and a fine. The families are still trying to fight the case and they don't really know what they did wrong.

Actress Dorothy Provine has passed away in Washington State. She was 75 and had been in hospice care for emphysema.

For Toobworld, her biggest contribution to the Tele-Folks Directory was Pinky Pinkham, a flapper entertainer in the crime drama 'The Roaring '20s'.

But even though it was from another fictional universe, that of the "Cineverse", this Caretaker of Toobworld will always remember her as Emmaline Marcus-Finch in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". Emmaline never wanted to join in on that search for the "Big W", but she was pulled along unwillingly by her older husband, her battle-axe of a mother, and her thick-headed brother. And yet she was the first one to discover the secret of the "Big W".....

As Emmaline, Dorothy Provine was one of my early crushes......
Good night, and may God bless.

OPEN MIC KNIGHT*

A bit of "serendipiteevee", that fortunate chance to hit a channel at just the right moment......

British Prime Minister made the mistake of talking about a woman he met during his election campaign walk Wednesday through Rochdale... while his lapel mic was still in operation:
While wrapping up the story about the open mic gaffe, Kyra Phillips of CNN then threw it over to Tony Harris who was taking over the anchor chair for the next hour. And Tony's response was something along the lines of "You gotta watch out for those open mics, isn't that right, Kyra?"

He was referring to this incident from about five years ago....

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Doctors plan further testing to help pinpoint the source of the brain hemorrhage that is keeping Bret Michaels in intensive care, according to a post Monday on the rocker's website.

A report from doctors is expected this week. The website doesn't say where Michaels, 47, is hospitalized.

"Please remember Bret is, and always has been, a fighter and survivor and is under the best medical care possible," the post added.

His New York-based publicist, Joann Mignano, on Friday confirmed a report on People magazine's website that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. Doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem, the report said.

Michaels is a contestant on Donald Trump's competitive reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice." He has served as one of the season's most outspoken celebrities and has so far avoided being fired in the boardroom.

At the end of Sunday's episode, an announcer acknowledged his condition and said everyone at NBC "wishes Bret Michaels a speedy recovery."

One of Mongo's favorites, "Shetland Jens Voigt", sandbags his way to the opening stage win in defense of his title at the SRAM Tour of the Gila.

I don't know what kind of shamockery this race is, with six or seven Pro Tour riders mixing it up with Continental pros, but the fact that Levi is riding for Team Mellow Johnny's and Dave Zabriskie is riding for Team DZ Nuts shows me that it's not exactly a Tour of "Anywhere in Europe" quality field.

Of the twenty one riders who finished ahead of Mellow Johnny himself, two specific riders of note were Floyd Landis and local Tundra Time Trial legend, Michael Olheiser.

Walking for Sacred Wild Salmon

Nimpkish to Sayward, Day2-Day4 of the Wild Migration from Alexandra Morton on Vimeo.

BC: A Mission Statement from Alex Morton: The Get Out Migration is a call to action to make government aware that we want wild salmon to take higher priority than farm salmon. Farms belong on land. We will start walking from Sointula, at the north end of Vancouver Island, on April 23 and arrive in Victoria May 8. Hundreds of people have pledged to walk portions of the trip, there are events under planning every night, Itinerary, now Frazer River to Victoria: http://www.salmonaresacred.org/itinerary

Who wants to run 80 miles!

If you are up to the challenge like some of our high school friends, start practicing. Every year there is a River to River run where you get a team of 8 and run from the Mississippi River to the Ohio river. Each team has 24 legs roughly 3 miles each leg each runner will get breaks but will be soar no doubt after it all. My 50+ year old father ran and when he got home wore his shirt with pride right before he passed out in his bed for several hours. Starting January of next year I will race against or with my dad in this event.

Happy Running-Austin

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a miscommunication between the brain and the muscles. Many people with have a hard time controlling all the muscles in their body; their outward appearance is a result of this. Many people think that people with Cerebral Palsy are mentally retarded, this is not entirely true. Some people with the disease do have mental retardation and the severity varies from person to person but their are other people that are very smart and live very successful lives. I know a man with Cerebral Palsy that has five college degrees! Miss Iowa, Abbey Curran, came in second runner up at the Miss USA contest and also has Cerebral Palsy.

During my speech I felt that I talked a little fast and wish I would have relaxed and talked slower. I feel that I did a good job in presenting my information to the class but sometimes messed up on pronouncing some words. I could have known my speech a little better so
I could of had better eye contact. Overall I am happy with my speech and the way I presented it.

HENRY XII: SOME TIDDLEYWINKS & A BIT O' WISH-CRAFT

Another curio from the 'Doctor Who' episode "The Beast Below"......

Before revealing herself to be the Queen on board the Spaceship UK, "Liz 10" told the Doctor how she knew about him from his involvement with past members of her family:

"The Doctor: Old drinking buddy of Henry XII. Tea and scones with Liz Two… Vicky was a bit on the fence with you, wasn’t she? Knighted and exiled you on the same day! And so much for the Virgin Queen, you bad, bad boy!"

We've seen his involvement with Queen Victoria and he mentioned how he married Queen Elizabeth the First to Sigma Ood. As for Queen Elizabeth the Second, it's an easy assumption since she seemed familiar with him when he saved Buckingham Palace from the crash of the starship Titanic.

But like Elizabeth the Tenth, Henry the Twelfth is from sometime in the future of Toobworld. I'm hoping that we'll see his story told someday on the show.

However, it could be that Liz 10 was referring to somebody from her family's past....

From Wikipedia:
Henry the Lion (German: Heinrich der Löwe; 1129 – 6 August 1195) was a member of the Welf dynasty and Duke of Saxony, as Henry III, from 1142, and Duke of Bavaria, as Henry XII, from 1156, which duchies he held until 1180.

He was one of the most powerful German princes of his time, until the rival Hohenstaufen dynasty succeeded in isolating him and eventually deprived him of his duchies of Bavaria and Saxony during the reign of his cousin Frederick I and of Frederick's son and successor Henry VI.

At the height of his reign, Henry ruled over a vast territory stretching from the coast of the North and Baltic Seas to the Alps, and from Westphalia to Pomerania.

In 1168 Henry married Matilda (1156 -1189), the daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and sister of Richard Lionheart.

He was exiled from Germany in 1182 for three years, stayed with his father-in-law, Henry II of England, in Normandy before being allowed back into Germany in 1185. He was exiled again in 1188. His wife Matilda died in 1189.

So Henry the XII referred to by Liz 10 might not have been a British monarch at all, but instead a German prince who was an in-law.....

Personally I'm still hoping it's somebody from the future. And as a bit o' Wish-Craft, I'd even sacrifice one of my suggestions for casting a future Doctor to play the role: James Buckley, better known to you Wankers as Jay from 'The Inbetweeners'. I think it would be perfect - Buckley and Matt Smith are close in age, with Buckley only four years younger. I could see him being one of those "boy-kings", reckless and immature, and out for a good time, with the Doctor tagging along at some point to keep him out of trouble. And it could take place in one of those near-futures, maybe from around the era of 'Star Trek', so that they'd still be on Earth but everything would feel... well, futuristic. Or here's another casting suggestion: Bradley James. Same arguments in his defense as those raised for James Buckley, with the added benefit that it might suggest a genetic link all the way back to King Arthur of the 'Camelot legends (as seen in 'Merlin'). Toobworld Central has already decreed that 'Merlin' takes place in an alternate TV dimension, but there's nothing that says Arthur Pendragon of the main Toobworld didn't look like that as a young man.....

That would be my hope anyway.....

From Wikipedia:
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006 was the President of Iraq from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Ba'ath Party, which espoused secular pan-Arabism, economic modernization, and Arab socialism, Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup that brought the party to long-term power.

As president, Saddam maintained power during the Iran–Iraq War of 1980 through 1988, and throughout the Persian Gulf War of 1991. During these conflicts, Saddam suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements seeking to overthrow the government or gain independence, respectively. Whereas some Arabs venerated him for his aggressive stance against foreign intervention and for his support for the Palestinians, other Arabs and Western leaders vilified him as the force behind both a deadly attack on northern Iraq in 1988 and, two years later, an invasion of Kuwait to the south.

By 2003, the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush perceived that Saddam remained sufficiently relevant and dangerous to be overthrown. In March of that year, the U.S. and its allies invaded Iraq, eventually deposing Saddam. Captured by U.S. forces on 13 December 2003, Saddam was brought to trial under the Iraqi interim government set up by U.S.-led forces. On 5 November 2006, he was convicted of charges related to the 1982 killing of 148 Iraqi Shi'ites convicted of planning an assassination attempt against him, and was sentenced to death by hanging. Saddam was executed on 30 December 2006.

Alternative title: Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?

God, I love it! This is just too rich for words. Megan Kellley puts up a YouTube dichotomy of the miscreants running rampant in Arizona over the new immigration law versus some shots of this past April 15th's Tea Party demonstrations. The proposition, of course, is that the left's demonstrations are more violent than the Tea Party assemblages.

Wanna guess how this turns out or just click and watch while the guy they hauled in to defend the Left turns himself into a pretzel? My recommendation is you go get a couple of frosties and a bag of chips (it's a longish clip) and treat yourself to a great lesson on how to torture logic.

By the way, Megan is hot, is she not?

Alaskan Native Women describe what is happening to Alaska and what must be done for the future Seven Generations

By Brenda Norrell/Censored News http://bsnorrell.blogspot.com/2010/04/bolivia-voices-of-raven-and-caribou.html

COCHABAMBA, Bolivia – When the ducks first saw the vapors rising from the highway, the ducks that could not distinguish between the heat waves rising from the pavement, and the heat waves rising from the rivers and ponds, perished.

In a similar way, it is unknown what lies within each of us that someday may result in our own survival. As with the ducks, being able to distinguish between the rising vapors of the man-made world and the world of natural creation, ensures survival of the fittest.

This is one of the stories shared by Kay Wallis, Athabascan and Gwich’in elder, during the World Peoples Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth. During an interview recorded live by Earthcycles, Wallis shares the beauty and majesty of her Yukon homeland.

Wallis said she appreciated being given the opportunity to speak for the animals and Mother Earth. She said her name “Arrow Carrier,” means, “I carry messages between people.” Her father is from Fort Yukon in Alaska and her mother from across the border in Canada at Old Crow.

Wallis described how the ground shakes and vibrates when the caribou arrive at the calving grounds in Alaska. She tells how the ocean breezes greet them across the plains. In the mountains, too, the wolves, their predators, are giving birth, in the cycle of life.

“We love the land, and the land loves us, otherwise it would not give us our nutrients." But, she said, things are changing.

“When the ducks used to come in my grandpa's day, they would block out the sun, there would be so many of them.”

Other creatures have vanished altogether. “We don’t hear swallows anymore.”

Glacier water moves fast in her homeland, where the people hunt and fish, living off the moose, caribou, birds, fish and salmon. In this land where a frozen chicken can cost $50 in a store, the people are taught to hunt, hunting in a manner where the animals give themselves to them.

It is life on a grand scale, and life that is a harbinger of things to come. “Some parts of the Yukon River you can’t see across. It is one of the largest rivers in North America.”

It is in this land, of the far north, that the people see what is coming. As temperatures rise, the salmon can not survive in high temperatures without sufficient oxygen.

“The world is going through change. We can’t go back. We are going to be called upon to make great sacrifices and great changes.”

Wallis said people have a natural tendency to go into denial mode, but humanity must act now to ensure the gifts of Mother Earth for Seven Generations.

Mary Ann Mills, Kenaitze Indian Nation, said the world needs to understand that the Arctic must remain frozen because it acts as an air conditioner for the earth. The Arctic cools the earth’s temperature. Climate change goes beyond all racial boundaries, she said, asking: "What happens to the spirit of the people when the foods they have been eating are no longer available."

What most people do not know is that 75 to 80 percent of the population of Native Alaskans was lost after first contact with those who came to their land, Mills said during the interviews.

Mills warned that 31 villages face immediate threats and 200 villages are impacted by floods and erosion. Ice is coming down the rivers.

Ice is melting now that has never melted before.

“We are the first people to be effected,” she said. The sensitive areas of the north are being compromised by emissions and oil drilling. Alaskan Native villages will have to be relocated because of the melting ice, or the people will perish, she said.

Mills said in the prophecy, it is told that there will be those who will attempt to destroy the land.
It is the Raven People who will protect the land. If others destroy the land, then the Creator will destroy these people, according to the prophecy.

“We have a chance, but we have to show respect.”

Alaska is the land of the Native people, but today there are few jobs and fuel sells from $10 to $14 a gallon. While trillions of dollars in resources have been taken out of Alaska, little has been returned to help Alaskan Natives.

While the United States and corporations have been taking with little given back, it was President Hugo Chavez and the country of Venezuela that brought heating oil to help Alaskan Natives.

Meanwhile, she said the result of the US Congress deceptively making Alaskan Natives into corporations has brought division, as it was designed to do, in this method of divide and conquer.

“The intent was to take our land,” she said of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. “It was to get the land for the big corporations.”

She said the United States does not own the land in Alaska, Alaskan Natives do.

“In my heart I am not a corporation. The truth is so powerful. Our people would like to have their freedom and like to have their land,” she said, adding that no one knows the land better than the Native people of Alaska.

Wallis and Mills thanked the people of Bolivia for their kindness during the World Climate Conference, President Evo Morales for calling for the conference and President Chavez for bringing heating oil to Alaskan Natives.

Navajo Horseback Riders arrive as Council negotiates with Peabody Coal

While Indigenous Peoples gathered in Cochabamba, Bolivia, for the protection of Mother Earth, the Navajo Nation Council continued to negotiate with Peabody Coal to dig out the liver of Mother Earth

BLACK MESA, Ariz. - Residents from Black Mesa arrived last Saturday evening in St. Michaels following a three-day, 100-mile horseback ride from Black Mesa en route to Window Rock. The ride was intended to send a message to the Navajo Nation Spring Council session, which began April 19, that the voice of all tribal members and the future of Black Mesa should be fully considered in current coal royalty negotiations with Peabody Coal. Riders and supporters rode and marched to the Navajo Nation Council Chambers on Monday and conducted a press conference at the Window Rock Tribal Park.

Many residents have expressed increased concern over the exclusion of community input in current coal royalty negotiations (aka "The lease Re-Opener") between the Navajo Nation and Peabody Coal Company. In the past month, Black Mesa residents have hosted a series of community meetings to discuss the health of Black Mesa and the need to address the leadership of the Navajo Nation. The ride is the next step to bring those concerns to the Council.

"This horseback ride reflects a long tradition of how leaders use to travel to carry important messages from the communities that they represent to gatherings like the Navajo Nation Council meetings," stated Marshall Johnson of the Tonizhoni Ani (Beautiful Water Speaks). "If the leaders who are negotiating on behalf of our water and homelands cannot come to our communities to explain to us what they are deciding, then we will [go] to them."

According to the lease agreement, "the 1987 Amendments provide for a Re-Opener to negotiate increased royalty rates and royalty-tax caps for each successive ten-year period after 1987." The Navajo Nation coal royalty rate is currently 12.5 percent under the 8580 Lease (which covers a portion of Peabody's Kayenta Mine Operation on the Navajo Nation), and 6.25 percent under the 9910 Lease (which covers both a portion of Peabody's Kayenta Mine and the now-closed Black Mesa Mining Operation with shared ownership of coal reserves between Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe).

In 1993, the Navajo Nation initiated a lawsuit against the Federal Government for $600 million in damages from decades of below-market royalty rates. In April 2009, after years of conflicting decisions and appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the Navajo Nation.

"For 14 years, the official position of the Navajo Nation was that it deserved at least a 20.5 percent royalty rate. Now, Navajo Nation leaders are trying to ram through another 10-year agreement with Peabody at the 12.5 percent rates. If the Navajo Nation is really concerned about economic prosperity, why are they negotiating at rock bottom rates?" asked Nicole Horseherder of Tonizhoni Ani.

On April 1, the Navajo Nation Council held a work session on the Peabody coal lease Re-Opener. Presenters included representatives from Peabody Coal Company, United Mine Workers, Division of Natural Resources and Black Mesa United.

"It's unfortunate that the Re-Opener work session only had one group representing the views of some Black Mesa residents, but excluded hundreds of voices of community members who are concerned about Peabody's coal mining operations and how it has impacted them," said Marie Gladue of Voices of the People. "We need to be at the table because we are the ones who have to live with these consequences."

An Environmental Education Forum was held at St. Michaels Catholic Church grounds all day on Sunday. The Environmental Education Forum aimed to educate Navajo citizens and tribal leaders about the Peabody Re-Opener, alternative energy and green jobs.

Testimonials from community members from Black Mesa and other parts of the Navajo Nation struggling with environmental issues were given.

Black Mesa riders, supporters pepper delegate with hard questions.

By Marley Shebala
Navajo protesters met informally with delegates including George Arthur (Nenahnezad/San Juan/T'iistsoh Sikaad), the sponsor of a resolution to renew Peabody's lease.
Arthur chairs the council's Resources Committee, which is supporting the lease renewal.

"During a 30-minute talk with Arthur, Nicole Horseherder, founder of Tó Nizhóní Ání (beautiful springs speak), said elders and children are suffering from asthma and respiratory diseases related to living near the area being strip-mined by Peabody. She asked how Arthur and his committee could justify sacrificing the health of elders and children for coal royalties and mining jobs."

WINDER UP

This is a picture of Hawthorne, the Chief Winder in the 'Doctor Who' episode "The Beast Below". I'm not sure if Hawthorne's position was considered a combination of Prime Minister and Chief of the Secret Police.

I doubt this will ever be verified, but I wonder if the name of "Hawthorne" was an in-joke tip of the hat to Nigel Hawthorne. The late actor played the "power behind the throne" (as it were) in the series 'Yes, Minister' and 'Yes, Prime Minister'. And as Hawthorne was played by Terrence Hardiman, I'm tempted to suggest that either he was a direct descendant of Abbot Radulphus ('Cadfael'), or the Abbot's soul was "born to rerun" all those centuries later..... That's right, I said a "direct" descendant! Come on, even Brother Cadfael had a son! He couldn't have been the only one at St. Winifred's who was monk-ing around!

FOR SHAME, BBC! FOR SHAME!

Just nearly a month after ABC threw the viewers out of the world of 'Lost' with their stupid 'V' countdown clock, the BBC pulled a similar stunt with a cartoon version of Graham Norton across the screen during the pivotal speech by the Doctor in the climax of this week's 'Doctor Who' episode "The Time Of Angels'.

Network suits. Even across "the Pond", they should be nibbled to death by ducks as Harry Reasoner once said.

"If that is a duck pond, why are there no ducks in it?"
The Doctor
'Doctor Who'

SO SAYETH THE QUEEN

I've seen a couple of online pans of Sophie Okonedo's accent as "Queen Liz Ten" in the 'Doctor Who' episode "The Beast Below". (One made me laugh - calling it "Dick Van Dyke bad", a reference to his role as Bert in "Mary Poppins".)

But that would only be a valid complaint if it was an accent from the present day. This episode was set in the 32nd Century (approximately) and who knows how much the accent may have changed in those intervening ages.
