A Hundy

Mongo's 100th post!
Keepin' the dream alive.

Shut The F*** Up

Variety of excuses made by Cervelo riding triathletes who
get schooled by Mongo.

1. I ran/swam before I rode.

2. I'm running/swimming after I ride.

3. I'm training in a specific heart rate zone.

4. I'm working on cadence.

5. I'm on a recovery ride.

Life at Chateau Gahan Isn't Always a Bowl of Cherries

My sister commented to me the other day that my blog is making her sick. Sick, she says, because I sound all Pollyanna. "Your life sounds way too perfect", she whines. Now, you have to know my sister to know that she says this in a very loving way, albeit whiny. She adores me (as much, no, not as much, as I adore her). We pick on each other as only two best friends can. There are never any hurt feelings involved, for the simple reason that we know how far we can push it with each other. And, the bottom line is that all of our conversations end in us laughing hysterically. In the case of her protest about my blog, the ensuing laughfest was all about our dysfunctional lives, our regrets. Granted, I want my blog to be uplifting and reflect my, for the most part, content lifestyle. But perhaps a little dose of reality would make me more real. So here goes . . . a list of the things that make my life very real. Humbling to write, but like Pollyanna herself, I'm including a line that gives the ugly reality a somewhat positive slant.

10. I'm chunky. But children like to cuddle with me.
9. I've come out of a terribly failed marriage. But have come to find myself — whom I rather like, I might add.
8. My daughter and I have our rocky moments. But she sure is my favorite person to be around (when I like her, which is 99.9% of the time).
7. I have a horrible sense of personal style. My home and surroundings are lovely, and that's where my creative energies go. I don't go so far as to embarrass my daughter with my clothes choices, but suffice it to say that she and her friends have talked about getting me onto What Not to Wear. Pollyanna would commend me for all the money I save by buying big men's shirts and polyester pants at Goodwill.
6. I pick at the skin on my thumbs. A bad and ugly habit. But at least I'm not picking on people.
5. I regret the selfishness I displayed in my twenties. I know I hurt a lot of people, even alienated some. The silver lining is that I'm 47 now and wiser, and whenever I get the chance, I apologize to those people and ask forgiveness.
4. I wish I would have pursued my life's passions. I remember as a child digging in the yard and pretending to be an archaeologist. As a "world famous magazine editor," taking blank sheets of paper and creating kids' and lifestyle mags filled with my own articles and drawings. Laying out house plans, complete with furniture, on graph paper, dreaming of becoming an interior designer. The bright side: at least I took my art history degree and worked for two years at a museum of art AND I do have the other half of my life ahead of me.
3. As a mother, though, had I been financially able to, I would have been a stay-at-home mom. I could never understand why any woman would choose to have a career if financially she could be at home with her children; that's just my personal opinion. Nothing can get back the time I lost with my daughter; it would have been so fun to be more involved in her school and afterschool activities. But, I've been super lucky to have a well paying job with a certain degree of flexibility.
2. I suppose I'm probably odd-woman-out, but I have no desire to date or have a man in my life. Is this selfish of me considering that Harleigh would love nothing more than to have a loving father in her life? Just the thought of going on a date sucks the life out of me. I'm happy with things the way they are. Perhaps I'll have a change of heart when my girlie goes off to college. Or I will wind up what the neighborhood children call "the character," who lives alone in a house full of cats, pulls a wagon to the grocery store, and festoons her front porch with a giant plastic goose adorned in an ever-changing parade of holiday attire.
1. And finally, I sometimes battle with depression. I think it is very hormone-related, as it came upon me when pre-menopausal night sweats began and the period started ignoring the calendar. Before I experienced these bouts, had anyone come to me looking for a sympathetic ear about their depression, I would have told them to suck it up, think of happy things, and get on with their life. But now that I know depression on a fairly intimate basis, I have a whole new appreciation for what people go through in this state.

And so, there I am, exposed. And happy to be the me that I am.

Peach Hand Held/Round Arrangement

Remember my trip to the Farmers Market yesterday?
Well here they are!

I started to arrange them in my hand like a bouquet.

and made my daughter hold them so I could take pictures.
My "in house" labor*hehe : )*

The I cut and transferred them to a pretty white vase I found at Goodwill for $2.
I love Goodwill.

I'm kinda liking these cute little bud vases from Ikea...can you see the polka dot pattern?

How Cool Is This ?

Steve,I'm an old timer who still gets out and skates. Thanks for all you've done for the sport. I'm rockin' an Alva with ribs and a tailbone and, of course, Indy's. Watching guys like you and Mountain still ripping up a pool keeps me young.

TODAY'S TWD: HEY, WILLIAM! 5-0!

Today is my brother Bill's 50th birthday.

I'd make fun of that, except for the fact I'm three years older....

He shares his birth date with Maurice LeMarche, the voice actor who's made a name for himself with his Orson Welles impression in "Ed Wood". (However, Vincent D'Onofrio physically embodied Welles.) In the Tooniverse, he has played the Brain (another Wellesian voice) in 'Pinky And The Brain', and several roles in 'Futurama'.

On this date in 1964, there was another Toobworld connection to my brother's birthday: 'Jeopary!' made its debut on NBC.

Happy birthday, Brothermine!

FLOWER POWER

I met up with a new client today and she is the cutest thing ever. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree because she brought her mom and she too, was very sweet. I knew I would love working with her when she whipped out her invitation that was handmade on star dream paper.

Is this embossed I asked?
Why yes it is, she replied.
Super cute!

It was officially on, she was going to have the best floral arrangements ever!

We strolled around the flower Market and I couldn't help but take pictures.

Feast your eyes on my
blogarden
*as far as i know i just made up a new word, unless you've heard it then, well forget it*

So we are thinking a pale peach almost a pastel pink with heavy whites and cream, antique roses....
A bouquet that will pop out against a striking white dress that she is going to rock.

I am thinking that we will use the spheres from the arch to sit in these pedestals...maybe
For the Bridesmaids and the arrangements she would like a blue theme since the wedding colors are Royal Blue and Ivory
I'm going to search for the right blue and the lightest peach/pale to satisfy what the bride wants and make sure they don't fight for attention in the pictures with the contrasting colors.

I actually saw these nests like containers that I love and thought of this ad I saw in a mag that had tulips in them, they would be perfect in here. Really spring....the inside shot is just the liner.

These are just pics of beautiful flowers that I loved.
Enjoy!

I took a couple of pics of yellow and white flowers for an IndieBride that is getting married in May!
These bouquets are going to be gorgeous and how lucky to be married in Spring when everything is gorgeous and available.

STUNNING!
Although I have a strange craving for laffy taffy now......Had to take a picture because I loved the stripes! Not a very good one though :(

I went to the farmers market afterwards and felt inspired to make an arrangment so I picked up these pretties: Roses, Rununculas, and some Wax flower for a cool $20, let's see hat I can do with them?

I happened to run across the personal blog of Steve Caballero today. As a vintage skateboarder myself, I'm always interested in my contemporaries. This guy is a legend in the sport...He is also a family man, a Christian, an artist, an animal lover and a car enthusiast.

We are all guilty of some bad judgement every now and then... or in Mongo's case, all the time. The difference is that I have the ability to foresee the outcome of said bad judgement. Mongo likes to call it Self-Fulfilling Stupidity.
I slammed on my skateboard today doing a snap turn into my driveway at 20mph on a wet road. I saw it coming before I started, but I did it anyway.
Elbow...hip...back...knee...head...hand...all damaged in some way.

One of my favorite beach purchases

On every summer beach trip we usually buy something to bring home that we can keep out as a reminder of the vacation. This is one of my favorites, a hanging hot air balloon that for years we hung in Harleigh's room. Then when her tastes changed, we moved it to the rumpus room. One of those things that I will have forever, that my grandchildren will look at and imagine The Borrowers piled in and waving, off on a trip to some faraway land.

Ready for Summer

I got this small (toddler-sized) handmade Adirondack chair at a tag sale held by a local private school. I love that it always reminds me of summer and the beach. Even at Christmas, it kept its place, but did share it with the Christmas tree.

TODAY'S TWD: GOVERN MEN

While working up that Deep Six list of TV governors a few weeks ago (in connection to the Spitzer scandal in NY), I found a few other televersions of governors that sparked my interest for Toobworld connections.

DOUGLAS DUMBRILLE
First up is Douglas Dumbrille, who played Governor William Claiborne in a 1951 production of the 'Hallmark Hall Of Fame' - "The Pirate And The Lawyer". It's a role he also played in the movie universe back in 1938 in the original version of "The Buccaneer".

Claiborne was the territorial governor of Louisiana who had dealings with privateer Jean LaFitte.

MILTON FROME
Milton Frome played the Kansas governor (but left unnamed) in "The Pied Piper Of Dodge City", an episode of 'Bat Masterson'. That episode definitely takes place in June of 1883, as it was about the famous Peace Commission photograph of Masterson, Wyatt Earp, Luke Short and other peace-keepers.

"They call Dodge City the Queen of the Cow Towns.
It would be nice to know the lady wears an honest crown
."
Governor
'Bat Masterson'

Frome also played Governor DeWitt in "That Taylor Affair", an episode of 'Riverboat'. But they can't be the same man since 'Riverboat' took place on the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers during the 1840s. Forty years earlier and too far away, but I suppose an argument could be made that they might be related... at least in Toobworld.

(The plot of that episode sounds like a doozy - Holden Grey, captain of the Enterprise, got the "bright" idea to boost fame for the riverboat by kidnapping President Zachary Taylor.)

J. EDWARD McKINLEY
This would be a "Born To Rerun" case with the governors played by J. Edward McKinley. Of the two he played in Televsion, his portrayal of Governor George C. Handley is perhaps better known. That's mostly due to the fervent following for 'The Andy Griffith Show' in which Governor Handley was seen in the episode "The Cannon".

Almost 100 years earlier in the Toobworld timeline, he played the governor in "The Immovable Object", an episode of 'Bronco'. It's a convention in TV for actors to play similar roles in the past and the future. Sure, usually it happens in the same TV series, but Toobworld absorbs them all into one universe.

McKinley also played an Old West governor in the movie "There Was A Crooked Man", but that's a different universe of course.

DWR has such cool stuff....

I was driving in the City today and I saw this place over off of Potrero and I couldn't wait to get home and see if I could shop online and sure enough their site is off the hook. I just can't personally afford it but I can window shop.

I love this from DWR.com You can build a room with this as your centerpiece.

Wow! This stuff is supposed to be able to light up fast(even when wet) and it's an all-natural replacement to lighter fluid according to the site. For $5 I may have to stick my head in their studio, pick one up and try it out!
