13.1

On Saturday November 20, 2010 Katie Whightsel, Emmie Schultz, and Sarah Wortman completed their first half marathon. The "great" idea to run 13.1 miles was Katie's. She decided that it would be an idea to keep us in shape after the cross country season. The day after our last meet, we had an unofficial practice with Coach Wiedman to run 6 miles. We also got together after school a couple of times. The day of the race came up too quickly for all three of us, but we felt we were sufficiently ready! Our only goal was to not walk. The race started and we were feeling great. A parade was going to be following the runners through Mattoon, so we had quite an audience. We were feeling great (talking and laughing). By about the 4th or 5th mile the talking had minimized. When the turn around came we were feeling a little tired, but by the 12th mile we realized we were not going to die and we kicked it in and finished the race holding hands. We never walked and we all agreed we could not have done it without each other. We are currently looking for some more half-marathons to run and eventually try some triathlons and some day a full marathon, but for now we are resting until track season. Thanks Katie. :)
