Gerhard Waitz

This is the preliminary write-up of my companion character for the Ars Magica game I am playing in.

Gerhard Waitz

Gerhard is a German nobleman, the 3rd son of the Duke of Thuringia and heir to a great deal of wealth but not title. He chose the life of a learned man early, when it was clear that he was not going to inherit his father's title. This led him to enroll in the University of Bologna at a young age and educated himself in a wide range of topics. Upon receiving his degree, he returned to Thuringia and took up a position in his father's court as a diplomat of sorts. He served his father well for almost a decade as a clever political agent, helping shape and maintain his father's intricate political alliances with the other German princes.

However, as the years of travel rolled by, he began to wander further and further from the trail, often in the company of his dog Fenrir, while traveling throughout Germany. He studied plants, animals, and eventually began to encounter fae and other wild elements beyond the reach of civilization. Gerhard discovered he had a kind of second sight that allowed him to see the faerie creatures that others did not see, to recognize the boundaries of their domains, and navigate them safely. He spent long days wandering through these faerie realms and became convinced that an entire magical world lies in wait outside these boundaries.

By chance, he met a young magus named Otto von Reichmarten at a tavern in Erfurt. Otto was passing through Thuringia on his way south into Baden and had spent many long days on the road. They shared several evenings in conversation while Otto waited for a letter to arrive from some unknown source which Otto refused to disclose. They discussed many things that should not be discussed in the company of clergymen or scowling old women, and these long talks left Gerhard facinated with the potential that lay beyond the horizon; a world he could not yet touch.

When Otto finally left, he promised to write Gerhard if he discovered something in Baden that lay outside the normal scope of human events; something worth taking a risk to experience for himself. A few days ago, he recieved just such a letter and immediately packed a small bag and disappeared into the woods headed south.
